AUSTIN, Texas—The University of Texas at Tyler Baseball (7-8) dropped the series finale of their three-game series with Concordia University Texas (14-1) Saturday afternoon, 11-6.
For the second-consecutive game, senior outfielder
Josh Burns (Center, Texas) reached base to lead off the contest in the top of the first inning. The next five batters reached after Burns was hit by a pitch including back-to-back singles from senior outfielder
Graham Welch (Plano, Texas) and junior outfielder
Kolton Forsythe (Oak Ridge, Texas). Both batters drove in runs to give the Patriots a 2-0 lead.
Welch would come around to score on a Tornado error with senior infielder
Blake Wilson (Midlothian, Texas) at the plate. He was followed by another RBI-single, this time from senior infielder
Blake Maddox (Jacksonville, Texas) who sent the ball to center field. Before Concordia even had a chance to bat, UT Tyler held a 4-0 advantage.
On the mound, freshman right-hander
Kasey Williamson (Madisonville, Texas) made his third start of the season. He faced the minimum through the first two innings but allowed three Tornado runs to score in the bottom of the third.
Concordia added three more runs in their half of the fifth inning before both teams were retired in order during the sixth. The Tornados scored one more in the seventh after loading the bases to take a 4-8 lead. UT Tyler began to threaten in the top of the eighth inning with another RBI from Forsythe to score sophomore outfielder
Tanner Roach (Whitehouse, Texas). It trimmed the Patriot deficit to three, 8-5.
The Tornadoes were not done as they added three more runs in the bottom of the eighth to take an 11-5 lead. Trying to stay alive, Burns singled with two runners on and two outs to add another Patriot run in the top of the ninth. It would be the lone run UT Tyler could manage in the frame, falling 11-6 in the series finale.
Burns and Forsythe led the Patriots at the plate with a pair of hits each while Forsythe was the lone UT Tyler batter with multiple runs batted in. Burns also added an RBI while Welch and Maddox both recorded one. Williamson took the loss on the mound after 3.2 innings of work.
The Patriots will compete in a pair of midweek games next week when they host Southwestern University Wednesday at 6 p.m. and then host Milikin University the following day at Irwin Field for a 7 p.m. first pitch.
