TYLER, Texas -- Cameron picked up a Lone Star Conference divisional win over host UT Tyler Saturday, posting a 71-52 victory over the Patriots behind a strong first-half shooting performance.
Cameron shot 59 percent (17-for-29) from the field in the opening half, including a 7-for-12 effort (58 percent) from 3-point range as the Aggies jumped out to a 43-23 halftime lead and maintained a lead of at least 17 for the entire second half.
Ty Glover led the Patriots in scoring, finishing with 14 points to go with a team-high 6 rebounds and a game-high 4 blocks. Cameron's leading scorer was Brock Schreiner, who finished with 20 points with 15 of them in the first half as he was perfect (6-for-6) from the field in the opening half.
With the loss, UT Tyler dropped to 4-8 overall and 1-6 in the Lone Star Conference, and the Patriots are now 0-3 in divisional play. Cameron improved to 3-9 overall, 2-4 in the LSC, and 1-1 within the division, which also includes Texas A&M-Commerce, Oklahoma Christian, UAFS (Arkansas-Fort Smith), and Midwestern State.
Turning Point: Cameron jumped out to an early 15-1 lead, holding UT Tyler without a field goal make until Bradley Mason's three-pointer with 13:21 remaining in the first half. During that stretch, Connor Slater scored 10 points and Brock Schreiner score the other 5 for the Aggies, who made four of their first five three-point attempts.
How It Happened: Following Cameron's initial 15-1 run to start the game, Bradley Mason hit a pair of three-pointers that pulled the Patriots within 10 points, 18-8, with 11:55 left in the first half. The Aggies scored the next 8 points, extending the lead to 26-8, but UT Tyler scored its first two-point field goal with 5:45 left in the half when Ty Glover put back a missed layup. Xavier Fogle followed with a layup on the next possession, cutting the lead to 28-14, but Cameron finished the half with a 9-4 run to take a 43-23 halftime lead.
The Aggies scored 12 of the first 18 points after halftime, making it a 21-10 run in all, as Brock Schreiner's three-pointer with 15:46 to play gave Cameron its largest lead of the game, 55-29. UT Tyler responded with a 9-0 run in a span of less than three minutes, as Micah Fuller scored 7 straight before Chris Giles' short jumper in the lane made it a 55-38 game with 12:06 left. However, Cameron scored the next 5 points out of a media timeout, extending the lead to 22 points, and the Aggies led by at least 17 points the rest of the contest.
UT Tyler Standouts: Ty Glover scored a team-high 14 points, and he also led the Patriots with 6 rebounds and 4 blocks. Micah Fuller was the only other Patriot in double figures with 10 points, and he came up with a game-high 5 steals. Chris Giles added 8 points and 5 rebounds, and Bradley Mason also scored 8 points.
Cameron Standouts: Brock Schreiner led all scorers with 20 points, and Kendall Scott added 12 points. Connor Slater scored all 10 of his points in the first six minutes, sparking the Aggies to an early 15-1 lead, and he also tied for the team rebounding lead with Tyler Williams and Darius Green with 8 rebounds each.
By The Numbers: UT Tyler committed 11 turnovers to Cameron's 16, but the Aggies parlayed those changes of possession into a 20-16 edge in points off turnovers… Cameron also produced a 30-20 edge in points in the paint and a 10-5 edge in second chance points after posting a 44-26 rebounding advantage… The Patriots produced a 24-22 edge in bench scoring… UT Tyler finished the game shooting 13 percent (3-for-23) on three-pointers and 37 percent (20-for-54) overall… Cameron shot 45 percent overall (27-for-60) and 44 percent (10-for-23) on three-pointers… Micah Fuller's 5 steals were a season-high for any Patriots player this season.
What's Next: UT Tyler heads out on the road for a pair of Lone Star Conference visits to Texas A&M-Kingsville (Jan. 9) and Texas A&M International (Jan. 11) before returning home on Thursday, Jan. 16 to face Oklahoma Christian.
