TYLER, Texas -- UT Tyler student-athletes are leading the UT Tyler Athletics Social Justice & Equity Awareness Week next week (Oct. 26-30), producing a lineup of virtual events and programs throughout the week to highlight various themes surrounding issues of social justice and equity.
Each day of the week highlights a different theme with an engagement activity on Zoom or various social media platforms, and it coincides with the NCAA's annual diversity and inclusion social media campaign, which takes place Oct. 27-29.
"This week is important for our campus because of the social unrest our country is facing right now," said UT Tyler women's basketball player Azaria Reed, who is one of several students playing an instrumental role in planning and executing the weeklong event.
"It's crucial now more than ever that we educate ourselves on social justice by having these conversations. This social justice awareness week is important to me because we are addressing issues that not only affect me as a student-athlete, but also as a black woman. The themes we dedicated to each day of the week are all things I am really passionate about, and I'm grateful to be a part of a university like UT Tyler which prides itself in having a culture of diversity, identity, inclusion, and equity."
