DURANT, Okla. -- UT Tyler dropped a divisional road matchup at Cameron University Thursday night, as the Aggies sank nine three-pointers during a 35-point third-quarter outburst to extend its halftime lead and cruise to an 89-66 win over the Patriots.
After back-to-back matchups against nationally-ranked Top 10 programs, UT Tyler hit 6-of-12 three-pointers in the first half to stay within striking distance, trailing by 10 points at halftime, 42-32. However, Cameron dropped 35 points in the third quarter to extend the lead to 29 points before the Patriots outscored the Aggies in the fourth quarter by an 18-12 margin.
Carah Burdette came off the bench to score a team-high 14 points, and Kelsey Crouse and Kylea Johnson added 13 points each to lead the Patriots.
With the loss, UT Tyler fell to 3-18 overall and 1-16 in Lone Star Conference play. The Patriots are now 0-7 within the division. Cameron improved to 11-12 overall, 10-7 in the LSC, and the Aggies climbed into sole possession of second place in the six-team division with a 4-3 divisional record.
Turning Point: Less than three minutes into the third quarter, Kylea Johnson knocked down a three-pointer which pulled UT Tyler within nine, 44-35, but Ava Battese answered with her first three-point make after going 0-for-5 from long range in the first half. Kelsey Crouse added another three-pointer, cutting the margin to 47-38, but Battese knocked down five more three-pointers in less than four minutes to spark a 20-3 Cameron run, extending the lead to 67-41 with 3:03 left in the third quarter.
How It Happened: UT Tyler made 6-of-12 three-pointers in the first half, answering an early 13-4 deficit by closing the gap to four points, 36-32, on a Kelsey Crouse trey with 2:03 left in the second quarter. Cameron finished the half on a 6-0 run to take a 42-32 halftime lead.
The teams traded baskets to start the first three minutes of the third quarter until Ava Battese knocked down six consecutive three-pointers after missing five straight in the first half. Her long-range shooting sparked a 20-3 run midway through the period, and Cameron produced a 35-16 scoring edge in the third quarter to extend its lead to 77-48. Carah Burdette scored 9 of her team-high 14 points in the fourth quarter, as UT Tyler produced an 18-12 scoring edge to close the final margin to 89-66.
UT Tyler Standouts: Carah Burdette led the Patriots in scoring with a season-high 14 points, while Kylea Johnson and Kelsey Crouse scored 13 points each. Johnson and Miranda Villegas each collected 5 rebounds and 4 assists to share the team lead in both categories, and Beezy Birchette added 9 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists.
Cameron Standouts: Ava Battese scored all of her game-high 21 points in the second half, and she scored all 21 on three-pointers with six makes in Cameron's mid-quarter surge in the third quarter and another three-pointer in the fourth quarter. Maighan Hedge added 16 points, 9 assists, and 7 rebounds, and Stephanie Peterson came off the bench for 11 points and 5 rebounds..
By The Numbers: Cameron posted a 53-31 edge in total rebounds, limiting UT Tyler to just 6 offensive boards… The Aggies pulled down 20 offensive rebounds, creating a 25-12 edge in second chance points… UT Tyler committed 13 turnovers, and Cameron committed 12, and the teams each scored 18 points off turnovers… The Patriots shot 40 percent (23-for-57) overall including a season-high three-point shooting clip of 50 percent (9-for-18)… Cameron shot 42 percent (31-for-74) overall and 34 percent (17-for-50) from three-point range, although the Aggies went 9-for-18 from distance in the third quarter alone while shooting a combined 25 percent from long range in the other three quarters… Carah Burdette scored a season-high 14 points, reaching double figures for the third time in the past six games… Kylea Johnson reached double figures for the fifth time this season.
