Offense Explodes In Doubleheader Sweep

UT Tyler scored 27 runs in 14 innings Saturday, cruising to a 14-4, 13-3 doubleheader sweep at Oklahoma Christian

EDMOND, Okla. -- UT Tyler clinched another Lone Star Conference series win by sweeping Saturday's doubleheader at Oklahoma Christian, posting a 14-4 win in the opener and a 13-3 victory in the second game to run its winning streak to eight games.

The Patriots rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the fourth inning of the seven-inning opener, exploding for 8 runs behind Lukas Polanco's two-run blast down the left field line and another three-run shot from Bowie Farris, who added a two-run homer in the sixth. In the second game, UT Tyler scored in all seven innings, building a 9-0 lead in the first four innings before wrapping up a 13-3 victory.

Farris led the offense in Saturday's opener, going 4-for-4 with a double, two home runs, and seven RBIs. Riley Jepson was 2-for-2 with three runs, three RBIs, and a solo home run in the nightcap, and the Patriots finished the day with 27 runs on 29 hits in Saturday's 14 innings of action.

"You always love to get a road series win, and now we have a chance to do something special and get a sweep on the road," head coach Brent Porche said.

With the sweep, UT Tyler improves to 12-1 overall and in the Lone Star Conference. The Patriots remain in second place in the conference standings, trailing unbeaten Angelo State (13-0) by one game. Oklahoma Christian dropped to 3-10 on the year.

How It Happened (Game 1): All nine UT Tyler starters in the lineup registered at least a hit and a run in the 14-4 victory, and Bowie Farris led the way with a 4-for-4, 7-RBI performance. He gave the Patriot a 1-0 lead in the first inning with an RBI double to left-center, and he added a three-run home run in the eight-run fourth inning as UT Tyler erased a 2-1 deficit. Lukas Polanco got the inning started with a two-run home run down the left field line, scoring Jordan Gochenour after his leadoff double. Farris finished off the scoring in the frame with a three-run home run, as 11 Patriots came to the plate in the inning.

Farris extended the lead to 11-4 with a two-run home run in the sixth inning, and Corbin Geisendorff hit a solo home run in the seventh inning as the Patriots added three more for the final 14-4 tally.

Reagan MacDonald scattered four runs on 10 hits and struck out four in five innings to pick up the victory and improve to 2-0 on the season. Judson Schaper fired two scoreless innings to close out the win.

How It Happened (Game 2): UT Tyler kept its offensive momentum rolling into game two of the doubleheader, scoring two runs in each of the first two innings and scoring in all seven frames of the 13-3 win. Lukas Polanco's two-run single with two outs in the top of the first opened up the scoring, and Riley Jepson and Bowie Farris added two-out RBI singles in the second inning to extend the lead to 4-0.

Tanner Roach provided another two-out RBI in the third with a single to score Alex Smith, and the Patriots put four runs on the board in the fourth inning to take a 9-0 lead. Oklahoma Christian got a run back in the bottom of the fourth, but Smith hit a two-run homer in the fifth for another pair of two-out RBIs, and Riley Jepson hit a two-out solo shot in the sixth inning to give UT Tyler a 12-1 lead. The Patriots' final run also came with two outs in the seventh on a Cody Windisch single.

Garrett Arredondo struck out six batters in five innings, allowing one run on five hits as he improved to 3-0 on the year. Josh Garza gave up two runs on a hit and three walks with five strikeouts in the final two frames.

Inside The Box Score: UT Tyler scored 10 of its 13 runs in Game 2 with two outs… Four different players registered at least two hits in the opener, and five Patriots had a multi-hit game in the nightcap… Bowie Farris ran his hitting streak to 13 games, going 4-for-4 in the opener and 1-for-5 in Game 2… Jordan Gochenour also hit safely in both games, giving him a 12-game hitting streak… UT Tyler pitchers averaged over a strikeout per inning in the doubleheader, notching 16 strikeouts in 14 innings on the day… The Patriots have hit home runs in nine consecutive games.

What's Next: Sunday's series finale was postponed due to rain in Edmond, and the series is now scheduled to conclude on Monday, Feb. 24, at 1 p.m. The Patriots will return home next weekend to take on Cameron University in a four-game home series at the UT Tyler Ballpark.

Quotable (UT Tyler head coach Brent Porche): "We did a great job today continuing to score runs throughout both ballgames. Even when we got out to big leads, we didn't let off the gas offensively, which was really good to see from our offense."

"We have to continue to get better out of the bullpen. We didn't throw enough competitive pitches out of the pen tonight to really slam the door on the two wins the way we should have."
