WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- UT Tyler dropped the second game of a two-game Lone Star Conference weekend series with Midwestern State Saturday, as the Mustangs posted a 75-50 win over the Patriots to complete the series sweep.
For the second straight game, UT Tyler posted a new season-high in points, as Azaria Reed and Shequana Jackson led a balanced scoring effort with 9 points each.
With the loss, UT Tyler falls to 0-6 on the season, while Midwestern State improves to 5-2 overall and 4-2 in the LSC.
Turning Point: After both teams scored on their opening possessions of the game, Frances King scored 7 straight points to spark an 11-0 run for Midwestern State for an early 14-2 cushion. The Mustangs made 4 three-pointers over the final 3:16 of the quarter to take a 30-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.
How It Happened: Midwestern State raced to a 30-10 lead at the end of the opening quarter, as the Mustangs sank 6-of-9 three-pointers in the first 10 minutes. The Mustangs were just 3-for-15 from long range the rest of the way, but they maintained a lead of at least 19 points the rest of the way.
A Shequana Jackson jumper with 7:35 remaining in the contest capped a 17-9 UT Tyler run which pulled the Patriots within 19, 59-40. Morgan Lenahan answered with a three-pointer, her third of the game, to extend the lead beyond 20 points for the remainder of the contest.
UT Tyler Standouts: Shequana Jackson scored a season-high 9 points to help lead the Patriots, and Azaria Reed added 9 points to share the team scoring lead. Taylor Jackson scored 7 points, and Tyreesha Blaylock added 6 points, as 10 different Patriots reached the scoring column. Shequana Jackson and Madison Davis each collected a game-high 3 steals each, helping force 23 Midwestern State turnovers.
Midwestern State Standouts: Frances King recorded game-highs of 19 points and 5 assists to lead the Mustangs, and Morgan Lenahan added 18 points along with a game-high 8 rebounds as Midwestern State produced a 40-26 rebounding margin.
By The Numbers: UT Tyler shot 38 percent (21-for-56) from the field but finished 0-for-5 from three-point range… Midwestern State shot 49 percent (25-for-51) and 38 percent (9-for-24) on three-pointers… The Mustangs generated a 40-26 rebounding margin, leading to a 14-6 edge in second chance points… UT Tyler forced 23 MSU turnovers and posted a 23-13 margin in points off turnovers.
What's Next: UT Tyler will host a non-conference matchup against UNT Dallas on Wednesday, Jan. 20, before returning to Lone Star Conference play for a pair of road games at Texas A&M-Commerce next week.
