UT Tyler Drops Men's Basketball Rematch With LCU

Lubbock Christian built a double-digit halftime lead and successfully protected it down the stretch in a 77-62 win over UT Tyler Sunday

TYLER, Texas -- UT Tyler's Sunday evening rematch with Lubbock Christian produced a similar result to Saturday's first meeting with LCU claiming its second win over the Patriots after a 77-62 victory to complete the two-game weekend series sweep.

Soloman Thomas led the Patriots with 15 points, while Da'Zhon Wyche added 13 points, and a team-high 5 assists. Lubbock Christian had four double-digit scorers while three others added 8 points each for the Chaparrals.

With the loss, UT Tyler falls to 1-4 overall and 0-4 in Lone Star Conference play, while Lubbock Christian improves to 4-0 overall and in the LSC.

Turning Point: Midway through the first half, Roche Grootfaam threw down a slam dunk that pulled UT Tyler within a point, 17-16, but Lubbock Christian finished the half with a 27-13 run while also putting the Patriots in foul trouble as UT Tyler was whistled for 16 first-half fouls. Lloyd Daniels scored 10 consecutive LCU points during the run, as the Chaparrals extended the one-point game into a 44-29 halftime edge.

How It Happened: Both teams held leads and neither team led by more than four during the first 10 minutes of the contest, but Lubbock Christian scored 16 of the next 23 points after UT Tyler pulled within 17-16, taking a double-digit lead at 33-23 after Lloyd Daniels hit back-to-back three-pointers and added a pull-up jumper in the paint. Daniels scored 12 points in the first half and led all scorers with 17, and his efforts helped LCU take a 44-29 halftime lead.

In just over two minutes at the start of the second half, Soloman Thomas scored UT Tyler's first 7 points after halftime, immediately slashing the Lubbock Christian lead into single digits when his second three-pointer of the half cut the LCU lead to 45-36 with 17:56 remaining in the game. The Patriots got as close as seven points three different times in the second half, the last time after a Da'Zhon Wyche layup that made it 54-47 with 12:58 to play.

Lubbock Christian again responded with a 10-2 run, extending the lead to 15 again, 64-49, with 8:27 left. A Micah Fuller three-pointer pulled UT Tyler back within 9, 66-57, and he sank a pair of free throws to answer a Lloyd Daniels bucket, making it 68-59 with 3:52 remaining. The Chaparrals put the finishing touches on the win by scoring 9 straight to extend the lead to 77-59 in the final minute.UT Tyler Standouts: Soloman Thomas scored a team-high 15 points, and Da'Zhon Wyche added 13 points with a team-high 5 assists. Emanuel Gant turned in a 9-point, 5-rebound, 5-assist effort, and Milan Szabo scored 8 points while grabbing a team-high 7 rebounds for the Patriots.

Lubbock Christian Standouts: Lloyd Daniels led all scorers with 17 points, scoring 12 of his 17 in the first half to help lead LCU to a 44-29 halftime advantage. Cameron Copley added 14 points on 4-of-4 shooting from the field and 6-of-6 free throw shooting, and he also dished out a game-high 7 assists. Rowan Mackenzie scored 12 points, and Parker Hicks was also in double figures with a 10-point effort.

By The Numbers: Lubbock Christian hit 4-of-6 first-half three-pointers and shot 53 percent (16-for-30) from the field in the opening half… The Chaparrals finished the game shooting 53 percent overall (27-for-51) while converting from the free throw line at an 89 percent clip (16-for-18)… UT Tyler shot 43 percent (23-for-53) overall and 41 percent (9-for-22) from three-point range… The Patriots converted 17 LCU turnovers into a 27-23 edge in points off turnovers, but LCU carved out a 36-24 edge in points in the paint.

What's Next: UT Tyler goes on the road for the first time this season next week, visiting St. Edward's University in Austin on Thursday, Jan. 7 in the opening game of the two-game Lone Star Conference series, with the teams meeting again Saturday, Jan. 9, in Tyler.
