TYLER, Texas -- UT Tyler bounced back from Saturday night's defeat against defending Lone Star Conference champion Lubbock Christian with a markedly improved performance just 24 hours later, falling to the Lady Chaps by a 69-48 margin Sunday.
The Patriots withstood five LCU three-pointers in the first quarter, but after falling behind 27-8 after the first quarter, UT Tyler never let the Lady Chaps get comfortable with the lead. The Patriots kept pace over the final 30 minutes, with LCU outsourcing UT Tyler by a 42-40 margin over the final three quarters.
Shala Robinson led a balanced effort for UT Tyler with a team-high 10 points, with Shequana Jackson and Lauren Cortinas adding 8 points each while two other Patriots notched 6-point games. Lubbock Christian was led by Allie Schulte's game-high 20 points, as she knocked down 6-of-7 three-pointers and also grabbed a team-high 5 rebounds to lead the Lady Chaps.
After the loss, UT Tyler dropped to 0-2 on the young season, while Lubbock Christian is now unbeaten through four games.
Turning Point: Early in the third quarter, Niah Richard made a three-pointer which pulled UT Tyler within 15 points, 40-25, with 7:08 remaining in the third. Lubbock Christian responded with a 10-2 run to push the lead back over 20 points, part of a 22-8 run across the third and fourth quarters that gave LCU its largest lead of the game at 62-33 with 7:59 remaining in the contest.
How It Happened: After Lubbock Christian opened the game on a 17-2 run and led by 19 points (27-8) after the opening quarter, UT Tyler forced 5 LCU turnovers and limited the Lady Chaps to 3-of-11 shooting from the field in the second quarter. That allowed the Patriots to post a 10-8 scoring margin in the quarter, and after LCU produced another 21-point quarter after halftime, UT Tyler answered again in the fourth quarter by outsourcing the Lady Chaps, 17-13.
UT Tyler Standouts: Shala Robinson scored 6 of her team-high 10 points in the second quarter, helping the Patriots outscore LCU by a 10-8 margin to answer the Lady Chaps' 27-8 opening-quarter scoring flurry. Shequana Jackson added 8 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field, and Lauren Cortinas drilled a pair of three-pointers to also finish with 8 points and a game-high 6 rebounds. Carah Burdette and Inessa Pugh added 6 points each.
Lubbock Christian Standouts: Allie Schulte scored 15 of her game-high 20 points in the first half, scoring all 15 from long range by hitting 5-of-6 three-point attempts through the first two quarters. Juliana Robertson was LCU's second-leading scorer, adding 9 points to go with 3 steals and 2 blocks, and Maci Maddox came off the bench to register a game-high 4 steals.
By The Numbers: For the second straight game, Lubbock Christian made at least two three-pointers in each quarter, finishing the game with 12 threes and a .343 (12-for-35) shooting percentage from three-point range… UT Tyler finished the game shooting 38 percent overall (19-for-50), although the Patriots shot 46 percent (12-for-26) from the field in the second half… UT Tyler made four second-half three-pointers… LCU produced a 29-10 margin in points off turnovers and a 13-2 edge in fast break scoring… The Lady Chaps also posted a 39-30 rebounding edge.
What's Next: UT Tyler heads out on the road for its next Lone Star Conference contest, visiting St. Edward's University on Thursday, Jan. 7, before hosting St. Edward's on Saturday, Jan. 9, to wrap up next week's two-game Lone Star Conference series.
