TYLER, TEXAS – The University of Texas at Tyler women's soccer team was inches away from completing the comeback in overtime against Texas Woman's in a 2-1 overtime defeat as a
Vanessa Bart shot rattled off the top post with less than two minutes remaining in the first period of extra time.
Bart's shot from outside the Texas Woman's box floated over top of the Pioneer keeper and caught the top corner of the frame in what would have been the Patriot's second unanswered goal after falling behind by a 1-0 deficit in the first half. Texas Woman's scored a little over a minute later with 37 seconds remaining in the first overtime period to escape with the 2-1 victory.
Sophomore
Jordan Colbert scored her third penalty kick goal of the season to tie the match up in the 75
th minute after sophomore
Alexa Hernandez drew a foul inside the Texas Woman's box. Colbert converted her third penalty in as many games, dating back to an Oct. 9
th match against West Texas A&M in which she had two penalty kick goals, to tie the match up at 1-1.
The Pioneers used a penalty kick of their own in the first half to break the scoreless tie in the 24
th minute.
UT Tyler found different ways to pressure Pioneer keeper Morgan Sherman coming out of the halftime break as
Jullia Trabach and
Brooklyn Robinson both had quality looks within the first 12 minutes of the second half. The offensive pressure eventually forced the Pioneers to make a mistake in their own box, taking down Hernandez after a strong run from the outside to allow Colbert to cash in on the equalizer.
Bart's effort nearly completed the comeback as she took a touch from midfielder
Sydnee Garner to the middle of the field and delivered a well struck effort to the top corner of the goal that caught nothing but post and fell straight down. Texas Woman's was able to end the match in their very next possession after the Bart attempt on net and moves to 10-2-2 on the year.
The Patriots have now taken two top sides from the LSC to overtime in their last three matches including the 4-3 overtime loss against #21 West Texas A&M back on Oct. 9. All three of the most recent losses for UT Tyler have come by just a single goal.
Texas Woman's held the shots advantage in the match with 15, putting seven on net, while UT Tyler posted 12 attempts of their own. Five of those efforts made their way on goal for the Patriots. Those five shot on goal attempts all came from the foot of a different Patriot.
Junior keeper
Camri Cecil made fives saves on the night.
UT Tyler will travel to San Angelo, Texas for a 1 p.m. match against Angelo State on Saturday afternoon.
