Assamoi Sends the Patriots to the LSC Tournament for the Second Year in a Row

A late second half surge from UT Tyler punches their ticket to the Lone Star Conference postseason tournament.

DALLAS, TEXAS – Despite going down 2-0 within the first 10 minutes of the match, the Patriots fought back with a strong second half and a quick goal in the first overtime period to seal the victory.

In the sixth minute of play, DBU connected on a series of passes on a counter attack, before Ethan Martinez sent a shot that Mathias Eriksen was unable to hang on to. That shot deflected to a streaking Mason Wallack who was able to knock it home.

Just three minutes later, it was Martinez again creating havoc. After the ball found its way into the box, a deflection allowed the ball to land right at the feet of Martinez, who was able to finish it and give DBU a 2-0 lead.

The Patriots were unable to create much offense of their own in the first half. They managed just four shots in the period to DBU's nine. The lone shot on goal came in the 24th minute as Shane Popieluch connected on a loose ball that was scooped up by the DBU goalkeeper.

The second half started out completely different for the Patriots. They managed three shots in the first eight minutes of play. The defense flipped their own script, not allowing a single shot from DBU until 17 minutes into the second half.

In the 74th minute, the Patriots began their comeback. Popieluch was the man to begin the attack, collecting a loose ball and threading the needle to a slashing Michael Agyeman in the box. Agyeman was brought down from behind on the play, setting up a penalty kick to be taken by Bryan Rivas-Guzman. Rivas-Guzman calmly took the shot, placing it in the open net to make the score 2-1.

With just under six minutes to play, Popieluch picked a fantastic time to score his first career goal. This time it was Rivas-Guzman taking a corner kick that was deflected out of the box by DBU. That ball landed at the feet of Popieluch, who struck a laser of a shot with his right boot that found the left side of the net to tie up the contest.

Neither team was able to score the game winner in the final five minutes of the contest. The Patriots offense came alive in the second half, outshooting DBU 11-4 in the period and putting all of the pressure back on DBU.

In the overtime period, senior leader and captain Thierry Assamoi didn't wait long to give the Patriots the game winner. Just 44 seconds into the extra period, it was Rivas-Guzman putting his imprint on the game yet again. This time he struck a corner kick that landed right on the head of Assamoi, who was able to head it home into an empty net and send the Patriots to the postseason.

The Patriots will head into the postseason riding a two game winning streak and the offense firing on all cylinders. That matches their longest streak of the season, and the six goals in two games is the most in a two game stretch this season.

UT Tyler will take on St. Mary's in the first round of the LSC tournament. That game will mark the third contest of the season between the two teams, with each team taking a victory thus far. That contest will take place in San Antonio, Texas as St. Mary's will have the honor of hosting.
