Patriots Return To Action With 77-60 Win Over DBU

UT Tyler led by double-digits for the entirety of the second half of action on Saturday afternoon in route to a non-conference victory over DBU

DALLAS, TEXAS – The University of Texas at Tyler returned after a two-week break to open up play against Lone Star Conference foes with a 77-60 road victory over DBU on Saturday afternoon.

The Patriots took control early and never looked back, never trailing in their first meeting with an LSC foe albeit in non-conference competition, and maintained the advantage for over 38 minutes of the game. Senior Da'Zhon Wyche led all scorers with 19 points, while junior Milan Szabo led a dominant rebounding effort for UT Tyler with nine boards.

Five of those nine rebounds for Szabo came on the offensive end of the floor, and helped generate 21 second-chance points throughout the contest for the Patriots. UT Tyler corralled 17 total offensive rebounds and dominated the rebounding margin with a 41-to-27 advantage.

The win gives UT Tyler an in-region, road victory that moves the Patriots to 6-0 on the year and keeps the program as one of three remaining undefeated teams in the Lone Star Conference alongside #1 Lubbock Christian and Texas A&M-Commerce.

UT Tyler led by double-digits less than 10 minutes into the game, opening up a 24-13 lead with 11:07 still left on the clock in the opening half. DBU quickly narrowed that deficit to just four points less than two minutes later, but couldn't overcome eight second-chance points in the first half alone for UT Tyler.

The lead moved back to double-digits with just over five minutes remaining in the half and then extended to as many 13 at the 36-23 mark. DBU never cut the lead back to single digits for the entirety of the second half as the Patriots built a 20-point advantage with eight minutes remaining in the ballgame.

Graduate student Micah Fuller dropped 15 points, his sixth straight game to open up the 2021-22 season with double-digit scoring figures, and added seven rebounds to the effort. Fuller was 4-for-8 from three-point range, and added his additional three points via the free-throw lane.

Szabo matched his nine rebounds with nine points on a 4-for-6 afternoon from the field. UT Tyler shot 46.0 percent (29-of-63) from the field as a unit and went 7-for-22 from three-point range.

UT Tyler will continue their play against LSC foes marked as non-conference competition with their second straight road contest on Monday evening at 6 p.m. against Midwestern State.
