UT Tyler opened Lone Star Conference play with an impressive 5-2 road win over St. Mary's Saturday afternoon in San Antonio.
 
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – UT Tyler opened its Lone Star Conference men's tennis schedule with an impressive 5-2 road win over St. Mary's on Saturday afternoon in San Antonio.
 
The Patriots entered the match ranked fourth in the ITA/NCAA Division II South Central Regional rankings after a challenging non-conference slate while St. Mary's was ranked third in the region.
 
UT Tyler claimed victories in the top two doubles matches of the lineup to claim the doubles point, and the Patriots won four of six singles matches to secure the team win.
 
Jan Lucca Marquardt notched a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles, and the Patriots answered a St. Mary's win at No. 5 with a straight-sets victory from Gonzalo Fernandez Gil at No. 3 to extend the lead in the match to 3-1. Yudai Watanabe's three-set win with a third-set tiebreaker at No. 4 clinched the match for UT Tyler, and Jonas Dixon added a three-set win at No. 6 singles to complete the 5-2 win.
 
With the victory, UT Tyler 4-7 overall and 1-0 in Lone Star Conference play. The Patriots' 10-match non-conference schedule included two matches against NCAA Division I competition plus three matches, all on the road. against opponents ranked in the top 25 of NCAA Division II. St. Mary's fell to 8-3 overall and 1-1 in LSC play.
 
UT Tyler returns to action at home against University of Arkansas-Fort Smith (UAFS) on April 2 and another home match the next day (April 3) against Cameron.
