TYLER, TEXAS – Trey Davis of men's basketball and
Chloe Chawner of women's tennis have been named the Male and Female Service Leadership Award winners as announced by the UT Tyler athletic department on Friday morning.
The award is awarded each year to a junior or senior student-athlete who excels in the classroom and provides service and leadership to their team, the athletic program and the university. Both Davis and Chawner have served as leaders within their respective programs both on the field of play and in their volunteering efforts.
Chawner was recently named both the SAAC Member of the Year and the Female Comeback Player of the Year earlier this week as part of the UT Tyler Athletic Department Annual Awards, and has been instrumental in working towards making UT Tyler a first-stop destination for student-athletes. She serves as the President of SAAC and has been voted for a second consecutive term by the organization for the upcoming 2021-22 year.
Chawner has been a part of the UT Tyler honors program since her freshman year and has been vital in spearheading multiple community service-related projects during her time as a Patriot. In addition to her work with SAAC, Chawner has also served as a mathematics tutor for the PASS tutor.
"My involvement at the University of Texas at Tyler has been both very rewarding and enjoyable within my academics, my athletics, and my college experience, as a whole," Chawner said. "After college, I will take what I have learned with me into the world and continue to do my best to make a difference and to be there for others."
Davis has assumed a leadership role within the men's basketball program throughout the program's required 10 community service hours a month, and routinely volunteers for additional hours. He has spear-headed efforts for the program in multiple projects including Habitat for Humanity, the East Texas Food Bank and multiple restoration projects across Tyler.
Davis is also involved in the UT Tyler SAAC as the representative for men's basketball, and has participated in each portion of his volunteering efforts with a positive attitude.
"Our program is exceptionally proud of Trey for being recognized for this honor," Head coach
Louis Wilson said. "Our athletic department is a service-oriented family full of students who are exemplary servant leaders. To be recognized as someone who stands out when it comes to issues of character, community service and academic excellence says so much about Trey is as a young man. We always talk about "we" in our program which means winning in every way. If you are taking and not giving back you are not winning every way. Trey reflects the best of "we"."
