Men’s Soccer Unable to Hold Off St. Mary’s in 1-0 Defeat

UT Tyler men’s soccer was unable to find the net and gave up a late goal to lose 1-0.

Box Score SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The UT Tyler Patriots men's soccer program could not find the back of the net and gave up a late goal in a 1-0 loss to St. Mary's on Wednesday. The goal came in the 86th minute of play and was scored by Andrick Ferrer.

It was a tale of two halves as both teams struggled out of the gate to get things moving. Both teams combined for just nine shots in the opening 45 minutes of play. Of those nine shots, just three of those made their way on goal.

Five of the nine total shots came in the last 20 minutes of the half as both teams picked up the pace heading into the halftime break.

In the second half both teams nearly doubled their shot output from the first half with 16 combined. Of those 16 shots, eight of them found their way on goal. It was the opposite of the first half's slow start, as six shots were fired within the first 16 minutes of action.

In the 78th minute, a shot from St. Mary's began a charge that lasted nearly ten minutes as they put all of the pressure on the Patriots defense. Lone Star Conference Goalkeeper of the Week Mathias Eriksen made a pair of saves from point blank range in the 81st minute that showed he was worthy of the award.

In the 86th minute however, Andrick Ferrer was able to play a ball just outside the box and fire a shot just past the outstretched arms of Eriksen to give the Rattlers the game winning goal with just four minutes remaining.

The Patriots were able to put up two more shots in the closing minutes, but neither of them found their way on goal as the Rattlers ran out the clock to end the game.

Junior's Shane Popieluch and Michael Agyeman led the Patriots with three shots each on the evening. Sergio Sola, Malte Andres and Caleb Allen all made their way into the shot category as well. Eriksen allowed just the one goal while making seven saves in the game.

Coming up next for the UT Tyler men's program will be a home matchup as they head back to Citizen's 1st Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex to host Texas A&M International on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Following the home game the Patriots will hit the road again for a two game road trip against UT Permian Basin and Mississippi College.
