Women’s Tennis Set for ITA South Central Regional

The Patriots women’s tennis program hits the road for San Angelo, Texas to take on the ITA South Central Regional tournament.

TYLER, TEXAS – The UT Tyler women's tennis program hits the road this week as they travel to San Angelo, Texas to battle it out at the ITA South Central Regional tournament.

This year's regional will be hosted by fellow Lone Star Conference competitor Angelo State and will be played on a hard surface. This year's regional comes after last year's event was cancelled.

The format for the regional will be a first match consolation draw for both singles and doubles. This means the losers of the first matches will compete in a separate consolation bracket in their respective draws. There are 74 singles players and 35 doubles teams taking part in the regional.

HOW THE SEASON HAS SHAPED UP

The Patriots have competed in two tournaments this fall. Their first event was the Tyler Invite which was hosted by UT Tyler and Tyler Junior College back on Sept. 3 and 4. This event featured competition from the Division I, Division II and top junior college levels.

This event saw the Patriots have a host of success with titles in multiple flights. Brooklyn Ross, Leony Deutschmann, and Gaini Ibrasheva all claimed consolation singles titles in Flight 2, Flight 3, and Flight 4.

The Contender CrossFit Islander Open on Sept. 10-12 was the next and final tournament before this week's regional competition. This event saw the Patriots produce some solid doubles results.

Deutschmann and Ross combined for a fifth place finish in the women's "B" bracket by coming back after an opening round loss and winning two straight matches. Chloe Chawner and Chloe Dix combined for the same result in the women's "C" bracket as they also dropped a first round match, but won their next two matches for fifth place.

WHAT'S AT STAKE

The ITA South Central Regional will have some big stakes this week. The winners of the singles and doubles tournaments this week will automatically qualify into next month's ITA Oracle Cup.

In addition to the winners of the eight regional tournaments making it into the ITA Oracle Cup, there are eight at-large selections that will be made. Four of those will be made based upon regional finalists and the other four will be based upon regional quarterfinalists.
