Patriots Head North for Battle Against #6 Texas A&M-Commerce

UT Tyler will make the 86-mile trip to Commerce, Texas for a Tuesday contest beginning at 5:30 p.m.

TYLER, TEXAS – The Patriots will hit the road for just the second time in LSC play and look to push themselves back above the .500 mark in conference play.

ON A HOT STREAK

Lovisa Hevinder has officially caught fire from behind the arc. Back on Jan. 2, Hevinder set a new school record with nine three pointers made against Midwestern State after going 9-for-12 from deep. In 2022 alone, she is shooting an incredible 61.1% from three point range. Her season average is up to 45.6% which is tops in the LSC and 18th in all of Division II.

SERIES HISTORY

The Patriots and Lions have faced off just four times despite their close proximity. Their most recent matchup came on Feb. 8, 2020 in which the Lions came away with the victory on their home floor. Three of the four games in series history have taken place in Commerce, Texas.

THE SCOUTING REPORT

#6 Texas A&M-Commerce is ranked third in Division II in rebounds per game, ninth in scoring offense, and eighth in rebound margin. Each of those marks is the best in the LSC.

The Lions are led by a pair of sophomores in Dyani Robinson and DesiRay Kernal. Robinson and Kernal are averaging 16.1 and 12 points per game, respectively. Robinson is shooting 40.1% from the floor and averages 3.8 assists per game. Kernal is bringing down an average of 7.9 rebounds per game and shoots 45.6% from the floor.

The Lions are led by head coach Jason Burton. Burton is the all-time winningest coach in Lions history and holds a career record of 143-67. In the 2020-2021 season, Burton led the Lions to a South Central Regional Semifinal appearance and a 14-4 record during the shortened season.

LONE STAR CONFERENCE UPDATE

UT Tyler sits at 2-2 in conference play this season after a 1-1 split over the last week. That mark will put them in ninth in the standings, but postponements for a variety of teams mean that just four schools have played their full allotment of LSC games thus far.

Texas A&M-Kingsvile and West Texas A&M each sit at 4-0 on the year. Cameron follows closely at 3-0 thus far to be the third undefeated team. Texas Woman's is 3-1 and Texas A&M-Commerce and Angelo State are each 2-1. Lubbock Christian and Midwestern State hold records of 3-2.

ON THE HORIZON

Following tomorrow night's contest against #6 Texas A&M-Commerce, the Patriots will make the long drive out to Silver City, New Mexico to take on Western New Mexico. That contest will be Jan. 22 and is scheduled for a 3 p.m. tipoff.

Next week will see UT Tyler return home to the Herrington Patriot Center to battle it out against Texas A&M International and Texas A&M-Kingsville. The matchup against the Dustdevils will take place on Jan. 29 at 5 p.m. The contest against the Javelinas will take place on Jan. 29 at 2 p.m.
