Pioneers Hot Shooting Late Sinks Patriots

UT Tyler shot 42% from the floor but just 26.3% from deep as they fall to the Pioneers 57-51.

TYLER, TEXAS – UT Tyler battled hard throughout the contest but came up just short in the end as the Pioneers snapped the Patriots four game winning streak.

First quarter shooting woes for both programs was the story as both teams combined for 7-25 shooting through the first 10 minutes. Three different Patriots accounted for the eight points as Lovisa Hevinder, Kelsey Crouse, and Liah Davis each chipped in. Neither team was able to get off to a great start as defensive pressure from both teams forced a total of eight turnovers in the period.

The second quarter saw both teams wake up as they combined for 12-23 shooting from the floor. A quick 6-2 run from the Patriots in just 1:52 of game time saw UT Tyler take the lead. That run was extended all the way out to 11-2 thanks to the Patriots holding the Pioneers to just two points in the first 3:47 of the second quarter.

After the Patriots stretched the lead to eight, Texas Woman's responded with a 10-2 run to close out the quarter. That made it a 26-26 game at the half break. Crouse and Davis each scored four points in the period, and Destini Whitehead added in five of her own.

The third quarter was all defense for the Patriots as they allowed just two made field goals from the Pioneers in the period. Both of those makes came within the first 1:46 as Texas Woman's stretched the lead to four. The Patriots responed with a 7-0 run with three layups from Davis and a three pointer from Hevinder.

3:16 was the scoring drought for the Pioneers until two made free throws ended it with exactly five minutes to go in the period. UT Tyler forced another 4:58 scoring drought that ended with a pair of free throws with just two seconds to play in the quarter. However, the Patriots were not able to capitalize as they scored just one layup during the drought.

Texas Woman's made their charge early in the fourth quarter, missing just two shots in the first 6:56 of the period. Both teams battled early, but it was the Pioneers on the better end of a 17-12 run. That spelled the end for the Patriots in the contest as they went ice cold from the field during the back half of the quarter.

Liah Davis led the Patriots with a team-high 14 points on 6-10 shooting. Whitehead chipped in 11 of her own to be the other Patriot in double digits.

Davis also had a team-high nine rebounds and Hevinder and Elli Emrich each chipped in five.

Kelsey Crouse led the team in assists in the contest with four, and also led in steals with three.

Next up for UT Tyler will be a two game road trip beginning with a Thursday contest against Oklahoma Christian. That game is scheduled to tip off at 5:30 p.m. Following that contest will be a 2 p.m. start against UAFS on Saturday.
