TYLER, TEXAS – The UT Tyler volleyball team picked up right where it left off in Friday's win over Texas Woman's in a 3-0 (25-21, 25-11, 25-21) sweep over Midwestern State on Saturday afternoon.
The Patriots hit .278 as a team with 15 or more kills in all three sets and used a historic effort from senior
Savannah Guzman on the defensive side of the net to limit Midwestern State to just 28 kills in the match. Guzman notched 27 digs, matching the highest dig total in a three-set match in the history of the program, and eclipsed the 1,500 career dig total in the process.
Guzman and the Patriot defense allowed just eight kills in each of the first two sets, and notched 70 digs for the match while limiting Midwestern State to just a .113 hitting percentage for the match.
Senior
Mikayla Ware led the Patriot offense with 17 kills, while junior
Evelyn Torres and freshman
Jeorgia Jones each hit north of .400 in the match to provide the majority of the offensive support for Ware. Torres put down eight kills in 13 swings, while Jones totaled her seven kills in just 14 swings for .462 and .429 hitting percentages respectively.
UT Tyler opened up set one with four straight kills coming out of the 9-9 mark to lead 13-9, and maintained at least a three-point margin from that point forward in the 25-21 set victory. 19 of the 25 UT Tyler points came via a kill in the opening frame.
That offensive effort was much more efficient in the second and third frames, especially in a second set in which the Patriots put down 16 kills in just 37 swings while committing just a pair of attacking errors for a .378 hitting percentage. UT Tyler went on an impressive 15-to-1 run coming out of the 7-7 mark to build a 21-8 lead in what would end up being a 25-11 second set victory.
UT Tyler led 18-9 in what would be the third and final set of the match before surviving a late Midwestern State push in the 25-21 win. Midwestern State rallied for a 7-to-2 run in the late stages of the set to narrow the once nine-point deficit to just three at 24-21, but couldn't overcome the slow start to succumb to the three-set-sweep.
The Patriots out-killed Midwestern State by a 50-to-28 margin in the match to complete a strong offensive weekend for the squad. Sophomore
Adeline Ortman posted 25 assists and eight digs while classmate
Addison Evans reached a double-digit dig total with 11 for the night.
UT Tyler's win moves their overall record to 14-7 on the year and 7-3 in Lone Star Conference play.
The Patriots will have just a single match this week, a Wednesday night contest on the road at Oklahoma Christian at 7 p.m.
