UT Tyler Answers Multi-Goal Deficit Twice to Tie St. Edward's by 4-4 Final

The Patriots fell behind twice by a two-goal deficit but scored a pair of goals in the final 20 minutes of action to collect a point in Lone Star Conference play

TYLER, TEXAS – The University of Texas at Tyler women's soccer team answered a two-goal deficit twice to come away with a 4-4 tie against St. Edward's on Wednesday night.

Junior Sydnee Garner set the tone for what would be the Lone Star Conference's highest scoring game so far in 2022 with a goal 45 seconds into the match. St. Edward's answered that early Patriot score with three unanswered goals, but couldn't put UT Tyler away as sophomore Faith Adje scored the equalizer in the 76th minute to help the Patriots keep pace in a tie for seventh place in the Lone Star Conference standings.

St. Edward's tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth minute, and then added two goals within the first 10 minutes of the second half to build what would end up being their first of two multi-goal advantages in the match. Junior Alexia Moreira cut the deficit to one with her second goal of the year in the 62nd minute, only to see the differential jump back up to two less than two minutes later with another St. Edward's goal to make it 4-2.

The Patriots played what could up being their most meaningful 25 minutes of soccer from that point forward, and used goals from junior Maddie Higgins in the 71st minute, and the equalizer from Adje in the 76th minute to answer the second two-goal deficit with a pair of unanswered scores to close out the match at it's eventual 4-4 final.

Both teams combined for 35 shots in the match, an outstanding 20 of which found their way on target.

Vanessa Bart, Cephana Deane and Jordan Colbert all collected assists for the four different goal scorers for the Patriots. Bart set up the Moreira goal with a perfect through-ball just outside the Hilltopper box, while Deane and Colbert set up the Adje goal with two timely touches that Adje made count with a perfectly-placed finish in the back of the St. Edward's net.

Garner's goal in the first minute of the game came on a botched clearance attempt by the Hilltoppers and Higgins cleaned up an Annabel Westbrook shot off the rebound for the pair of unassisted efforts for UT Tyler.

The Patriots stayed put in a tie for seventh place in the Lone Star Conference standings with 11 points alongside UT Permian Basin, who also secured a tie on Wednesday night. UT Tyler has three matches remaining in the regular season, while UT Permian Basin has just two.

The top seven teams at the end of the regular season will qualify for the 2022 Lone Star Conference Women's Soccer Championships.

The Patriots will hit the road on Saturday afternoon for a 5 p.m. meeting against Midwestern State.
