WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS – A pair of second half goals that took place less than two minutes apart allowed Midwestern State to earn a 2-1 victory over UT Tyler on Saturday afternoon.
The two Mustang goals flipped what was a one-goal lead for the Patriots beginning the second half of play thanks to junior
Sydnee Garner's fourth goal of the season in the 24
th minute. The road loss snaps a four-match streak in which the Patriots were able to get a result, but didn't cost UT Tyler any ground in the Lone Star Conference standings as they finished the day still in a tie for seventh place with 11 points.
The results seemingly fell UT Tyler's way across the LSC on Saturday, as the Patriot's remain tied with UT Permian Basin in seventh place in the race for one of the seven spots in the 2022 Lone Star Conference Women's Soccer Championships. UT Tyler still has two more matches and two more opportunities for points, while UT Permian Basin has just one game left on the 2022 regular season schedule.
Garner gave UT Tyler the lead with her second goal in as many games midway through the opening half after a beautiful shot from outside the Mustang box shortly after a set piece for the Patriots deep in Midwestern State territory. The Patriots held that 1-0 lead into the halftime break before a penalty kick goal in the 53
rd minute and another goal shortly after in the 55
th minute for Midwestern State quickly flipped the one-goal advantage to their favor.
Midwestern State won the shot battle for the match, out-shooting the Patriots by a 16-to-11 margin, and conceded just three UT Tyler shots on goal. Junior
Alexia Moreira led the Patriots with five shots.
UT Tyler will wrap up the 2022 season next week with a home match on Tuesday against St. Mary's and a road contest at Eastern New Mexico. The Patriots are now four points back of sixth place, and hold just a one-point advantage over Midwestern State in the standings entering the final week of the regular season.
