Williams' Big Night Leads UT Tyler to 86-73 Win Over Louisiana Christian

Senior Rashun Williams went for 35 points in his UT Tyler debut to help the Patriots move to 1-0 on the year

TYLER, TEXAS – Senior Rashun Williams dropped 35 points in his UT Tyler debut to lead the Patriots to an 86-73 win over Louisiana Christian on Monday night inside the Herrington Patriot Center.
 
Williams went 13-for-19 from the field to post the second-highest individual scoring total for the program in the Division II era, bettered only by Micah Fuller's 36 point effort back on Jan. 23rd, 2021 against UT Permian Basin. UT Tyler shot 56.1 percent (32-for-57) from the field for the game, and maintained a double-digit advantage for the final 13:40 of game action.
 
Senior Milan Szabo got his 2022-23 campaign off to a solid start with a double-double, connecting on 7-of-8 from the field and grabbing 10 rebounds. Graduate student Mohamed Diallo impressed in his Patriot debut alongside Williams, hauling in a team-high 11 rebounds to go along with eight points.
 
Williams and Diallo led a host of new Patriot faces that found their rhythm in the second half of action, building a lead of 17 points on two different occasions in the final 10 minutes of action.
 
Williams went for 17 points in the first half to help the Patriots jump out to a 21-20 lead with 9:08 left in the opening half, an advantage that they wouldn't relinquish for the rest of the contest. Louisiana Christian started out hot in the second half, narrowing the deficit to just a point at 43-42 with 17:02 remaining before 10 straight unanswered points for UT Tyler extended the lead to 11 with 14:36 remaining.
 
The lead would draw within single digits for the final time at 53-45 with 14:03 left in the contest before UT Tyler took control and settled into their rhythm for the final 10 minutes of action. The Patriots shot 62.1 percent (18-for-29) from the floor in the second half to outscore the Wildcats by a 47-39 margin.
 
The Patriots maintained control on the glass, outrebounding a Louisiana Christian squad 37-to-22 for the game.
 
Redshirt junior Mohamed Diallo joined Williams and Szabo in double figures with 13 points for the night in his UT Tyler debut. The Patriots as a unit connected on 9-of-24 (37.5 percent) from three-point range for the game.
 
UT Tyler will hit the road over the weekend for contests on Thursday and Saturday at Arkansas Tech and Northeastern State.
