Strong Second Half Propels UT Tyler to Victory Over Cameron

The Patriots outscored Cameron by a 45-to-25 margin in the second half of action to open up their three-game road trip to close out the 2021-22 season with a victory on Tuesday night

LAWTON, OKLA. – A fast start to the second half of action led UT Tyler to a 72-53 win over Cameron on Tuesday night in Lawton, Okla. to begin the final week of the regular season.

The Patriots outscored Cameron by a 45-to-25 margin in the final 20 minutes of play in the first of three road games to conclude the regular season slate for UT Tyler, thanks in large part to a 16-4 run within the first five minutes of that second half. Senior Micah Fuller led the team with 23 points, 13 of which came in the second half, and broke the UT Tyler men's basketball school record mark for made free throws in a career in the process with the 304th of his Patriot career.

Fuller went 4-for-4 from the free throw line in the contest, the final of which ended up being the school record breaker, and finished his evening 8-for-14 from the field.

UT Tyler made six of their first seven shots of the second half, and limited the Aggies to just one made field goal in the opening five minutes to negate a 28-27 lead for Cameron at the halftime break. Fuller capped off that run with a made three-pointer that made it 43-32 with 15:10 remaining in the contest.

The Patriots went just 1-for-14 from beyond the three-point arc in the first half, but tightened up the long-range shooting with a 4-for-7 mark in the second half. UT Tyler's success on the outside allowed the Patriots to work inside against the Cameron defense in the second half, resulting in 20 points in the paint for UT Tyler in the final 20 minutes.

Cameron finally slowed down the Patriot attack in the ensuing 10 minutes of action, and generated some offense of their own to keep the deficit at 11 with just over five minutes to play at 59-48 with 5:16 left on the clock. Fuller and the Patriots found their stride once again in the final five minutes, making all six of their final field goal attempts for the game, while Fuller capped off his night with seven points over that final stretch.

The 13-3 run in the final five minutes of play allowed the Patriots to pad their largest lead of the night, a 21-point margin at 72-51 with just 58 seconds remaining on the clock.

Senior Da'Zhon Wyche and junior Milan Szabo joined Fuller with quality offensive outputs in the victory as Wyche totaled 16 points and Szabo totaled 12. The Patriots shot 66.7 percent (18-for-27) in the second half from the field, pushing their overall game total to 49.2 percent (29-of-59) for the contest.

Fuller paced the team in rebounds as well, posting seven for the evening, while senior Soloman Thomas had five boards and Wyche and freshman Kyle Frelow each corralled four.

The UT Tyler defense was just as impressive as their offensive output yet again in the second half for the Patriots, conceding just seven made field goals to the Aggies for the entirety of the final 20 minutes. Cameron shot just 32.1 percent (18-for-56) from the floor for the game, and managed just 18 points in the paint as a team.

The win is exactly what the Patriots needed to start their three-game road trip to conclude regular season play. UT Tyler sits 10th in the LSC standings following the completion of this evening's play across the league with a conference winning percentage of .538 (7-6).

The Patriots will have two more opportunities to improve on that standing entering the 2021 LSC Postseason Tournament, beginning on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. against UT Permian Basin.
