TYLER, TEXAS – Angel Contreras and
Corey Perryman laid claim to another school record for UT Tyler and both the men's and women's 4x400 relay teams set records of their own to help lead the Patriots to another strong day as the men finished seventh in team score and the women finished tenth.
Audrey O'Connor got the day started for the Patriots as she took on the women's hammer throw and posted a 13
th place finish in the competition. O'Conner threw for a distance of 40.37 meters on her third throw of the day but came up just 1.18 meters short of qualifying for the finals of the event.
On the men's side of the hammer throw,
Ty McDaniel continued his stellar run of form as he posted a mark of 53.15 meters. That throw came on the final attempt of the day for McDaniel and placed him fourth overall and just 1.85 meters short of third place.
In the shot put,
Brooklyn House posted an eighth place finish after throwing the shot 12.69 meters on her fifth attempt of the day. The mark from House comes just .68 meters short of tying the school record set back in 2019.
On the men's side,
Alex Rodriguez stepped up and delivered yet another top five finish for UT Tyler as he threw the shot 16.50 meters on his sixth and final attempt. That throw proved clutch for Rodriguez as it moved him up from seventh to fourth overall in the competition.
Over on the track, the afternoon wave of the 1500 meter run for the Patriots women turned into a strong event as a pair of Patriots placed in the top three.
Marissa Agee took home the top prize as she ran a time of 5:04.06 to claim a victory of 4.57 seconds. That time from Agee also goes as the seventh fastest time in school history.
Tiffany Vargas brought home third place in the event as she finished with a time of 5:11.94.
On the men's side of the afternoon wave of the 1500, another pair of Patriots placed in the top five.
Jack Gipson had the top time as he finished with a run of 4:14.78 to place third overall. Just behind Gipson with a time of 4:19.00 was
Alexander Asad, who claimed fourth place.
In the afternoon wave of the 800 meters, UT Tyler put another pair of runners in the top five.
Calista Segura ran a time of 2:24.30 to top off a dominating performance and win by 3.16 seconds.
Nicolette Esparza placed fifth overall at 2:34.04 and outlasted several LSC opponents.
The Patriots continued their strong form on the day as they made their way into the finals of several events in the evening hours. Agee looked to build off of her dominant victory in the afternoon wave of the 1500 meters by taking on the evening edition of the event. Agee finished with a time of 5:10.25 to place seventh overall.
In the men's edition of the evening 1500 meter run,
Angel Contreras looked as strong as ever as he placed first overall in the event. Contreras ran a time of 3:53.04 seconds to shatter the school record by 1:07 and claim the top spot and earn another victory for the Patriots on the day.
MyKaela Alfred got things started in the hurdles with a sixth place finish in the 100 meter hurdles. Her time of 14.44 seconds finishes just .03 seconds behind her personal best and finished fourth overall among LSC competition.
Following Alfred in the hurdles was
Corey Perryman and
Ashton Turner. The two have been extremely competitive thus far in the season, and today was no different. Perryman earned the edge on the evening with a time of 14.27 seconds to place fourth overall and take over the school record in the event. The mark from Perryman also goes down as an NCAA Division II provisional mark in the event. Turner placed eighth at 14.56 seconds but was fourth amongst LSC runners.
Continuing in the hurdle events,
Mijah Collier placed seventh overall with a time of 1:04.90. That finish places her just 1.15 seconds behind her own school record in the event.
To cap off the day, UT Tyler took on the 4x400 relays and posted a pair of fifth place finishes for both the men and women. For the women's program, they took the track first, and posted a time of 4:02.11 seconds. That time from the combination of Collier,
Kyra Winn, Agee, and Segura will be a new school record in the event by .30 seconds. On the men's side, the combination of
Asa Harris,
Arsheal Ates,
Collin Rippy, and Turner combined to set a new school record by just .17 seconds with a time of 3:18.16.
Next up for UT Tyler will be another dual meet week as they take on the Texas A&M-Commerce Team Invite and the Stephen F. Austin Invite on April 8 and 9.
