#2 UT Tyler Takes Care of Texas A&M International in 4-0 and 9-1 Victories

The Patriot offense plated four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning in game one and then scored nine runs in the first three innings to solidify the sweep of Texas A&M International

TYLER, TEXAS – #2 UT Tyler finished game one strong at the plate and then posted nine runs on 10 hits in game two to collect a pair of wins over Texas A&M International on Sunday afternoon.

The Patriots scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning in game one and then put nine runs on the board in their first three trips to the plate in game two to earn 4-0 and 9-1 victories. Freshman Kaylee Davis went a complete five innings while allowing just three hits to the Dustdevils in the circle in game two to pace a Patriot pitching staff that scattered eight hits throughout the victories.

Sophomore Avery Farr went 5-for-8 on the day at the plate and freshman Sam Schott posted five RBI and a pair of extra base hits, including a grand slam in the bottom of the second inning, in the five inning run-rule victory in game two.

Starter Tatum Goff was entrenched in a pitcher's duel through five innings to start the day in game one, keeping Texas A&M International off the board while stranding four runners on base through the first four complete innings of work. The Patriots struggled to scratch across any runs over that stretch to keep the ballgame scoreless.

Goff found trouble in the top of the fifth as the Dustdevils loaded the bases with a leadoff double and then an ensuing pair of walks. Senior Sarah Gartman game on in relief of Goff, and retired the next two batters to escape the jam without conceding a single run.

That shift in momentum for the Patriots translated to the plate in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings, as UT Tyler finally broke through with four runs in the sixth thanks to four straight hits to leadoff the inning. Sophomore Hanna Fradkin got that rally going with a leadoff double, and then came around to score on a Goff single to make it 1-0.

Senior Ashley Perez strung together the third hit of the frame with a RBI single that moved Macy McAlexander, who pinch ran for Goff, over to third. Senior Bayli Simon kept the rally going and scored McAlexander with a double to left center to double the lead.

Farr connected on a two-out single two batters later that plated Simon and Perez to run the advantage to 4-0 and solidify the 4-0 lead for the Patriots. Gartman retired the Dustdevils in order in the top of the seventh to solidify her seventh win of the 2022 season after tossing 2.2 innings of shutout softball.

Perez finished game one 3-for-3 at the plate and Farr 2-for-2 with the aforementioned two RBI to lead a Patriot offense that ended the game with nine hits.

UT Tyler wasted no time building a big lead in game two, loading the bases in three straight batters in the bottom of the second before Schott launched her first career collegiate home run to left center that scored four runs via the grand slam. The momentum continued in the next plate appearance for the Patriots as they registered five hits in the bottom of the third to quickly make it 9-0 in their favor.

Schott posted the fifth RBI of her afternoon with a double that scored pinch runner Michelle Arias in that third inning, who came on to run for sophomore Audrey Escamilla. Escamilla joined Schott with the two doubles in the frame for the Patriots after Farr got on base with a one-out single to ignite the rally.

Escamilla's double brought a pair of Patriots home to make it 6-0, before Fradkin posted one of her three singles of the ballgame to make it 8-0. Goff walked with the bases loaded to plate the fifth and final run of the half inning to make it 9-0 in UT Tyler's favor.

Davis earned the start in game two and survived back-to-back doubles from the Dustdevils in the bottom half of the fourth, the latter of which scored the lone Texas A&M International run of the afternoon. The freshman kept the run-rule in play by retiring the side in the top of the fifth and collected her seventh win of the 2022 season with her five complete innings of work.

Davis struckout four Dustdevils and allowed just three hits for the ballgame.

Four Patriots recorded multi-hit efforts in game two, including a 3-for-3 effort for Fradkin. Farr, Escamilla and Schott all finished the contest 2-for-3 at the plate, while Schott had five RBI and a pair of runs scored.

The wins move the Patriots overall record to 30-4 on the year and 16-4 in Lone Star Conference play.

UT Tyler will be on the road next weekend for a pair of doubleheaders at St. Mary's on Friday afternoon and St. Edward's on Sunday afternoon.
