#1 UT Tyler Sweeps St. Mary's Behind Goff and Perez's Highlighted Efforts

Tatum Goff struckout 11 Rattlers and went a complete seven innings in game one and Ashley Perez posted multi-hit efforts in both outings to help UT Tyler to 5-0 and 7-6 wins over St. Mary's

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – Sophomore Tatum Goff tossed a complete game in game one and UT Tyler answered six unanswered Rattler runs in game two with three runs in the top of the seventh inning to sweep St. Mary's on Friday evening.

Goff posted the highest strikeout total of any Patriot pitcher this season with 11 in the 5-0 game one victory, tossing 7.0 full innings while allowing just three hits. Senior Ashley Perez matched the UT Tyler softball career record with the 40th homer of her career in the game two 7-6 victory that saw the Patriots negate a two-run lead heading into the final frame for St. Mary's.

Perez and sophomore Avery Farr both homered in that game two win, while sophomore Courtney Plocheck plated the game tying runs with her third hit of the contest via a single to right center. Plocheck drove in two runs on the single with the bases loaded after the Patriots strung together three consecutive hits to load the bases with just a single out.

That rally, in what would be the final trip to the plate for UT Tyler of the evening, finished off a balanced day at the plate for the Patriots in which they totaled 10 hits in each of the two victories.

UT Tyler left a pair of runners on base in each of the first three innings of the day before finally breaking through for their five runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh. Goff meanwhile retired the first nine Rattlers she faced in order, and then struck out three straight to end the bottom of the fourth with bases full of runners.

St. Mary's had two of their three hits on the day against Goff in that frame with a pair of singles sandwiched around a walk to load the bases, but got nothing out of it as the ensuing three batters struck out swinging as three of the 11 strikeout victims on the afternoon for the Rusk, Texas native.

Farr broke the scoreless tie in the next Patriot trip to the plate with an RBI groundout that scored senior Bayli Simon. UT Tyler then went to work in the sixth with two outs on the board, piecing together a two-out rally that featured an RBI single from sophomore Michelle Arias and then a bases-clearing double off the top of the right field fence for Perez to score a pair and make it 4-0.

Senior Mak Dominguez finished off the scoring with the fifth UT Tyler run in the top of the seventh, driving in Farr who led off the inning with a double, to make it 5-0. Goff retired the Rattlers in order in the bottom of the seventh to finish off her complete game effort.

Perez went 2-for-3 with the aforementioned pair of RBI in the sixth, while Simon got on base all four times she stepped to the plate with a pair of walks and two hits to finish the game 2-for-2. Dominguez joined Perez and Simon with a multi-hit effort, going 2-for-4.

Goff picked up her fourth win of the 2022 season to move her record to 4-3 on the year.

Farr hit the first of two Patriot homers in game two in the top of the second, a solo shot to leftfield, before Perez etched her name atop the UT Tyler softball record books in the top of the third. Perez hit a no-doubter off the left field fence, a two-run shot that made it 3-0 in favor of UT Tyler.

That homer stands as the 40th of her storied Patriot career, matching the career record of current associate head coach Whitney Wyly.

Plocheck added to the advantage with what would be one of her three RBI in the game two win, scoring Dominguez in that top of the third inning as well to make it 4-0 for the Patriots. The tides would shift from that point forward as St. Mary's scored six straight unanswered runs, two in the third and fifth innings and then the go-ahead four runs in the sixth, to take their first lead of the day heading into the top of the seventh with the 6-4 advantage.

UT Tyler quickly loaded the bases down by two in the seventh with singles from Farr, Dominguez and Goff, setting the stage for Plocheck to come through with the two-RBI single that scored the two runs needed to tie the ballgame at 6-6. Arias followed up the game-tying hit with a groundout that allowed Sam Schott, who pinch ran for Goff in the inning, to come home for the go-ahead run.

Senior Jacey Henry then tossed the most important inning of her UT Tyler career in the bottom of the seventh, holding the 7-6 margin in place with three straight outs to earn the first win of her Patriot career. Freshman Kaylee Davis got the start and went 4.0 innings while allowing just a single earned run, but found trouble in the fifth and was replaced in the circle by senior Sarah Gartman.

Henry came on in the rough bottom of the sixth for the Patriots pitching staff, and recorded the final out after the four-run damage had been done. The Henrietta, Okla. native retired all four batters that she faced in what ended up being a critical final out in the sixth and subsequent three outs in the seventh.

Plocheck finished game two 3-for-4 with three RBI, while Perez and Dominguez both registered their second multi-hit games of the afternoon. Perez went 2-for-4 with the pair of RBI on the homer and Dominguez went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

The win helps UT Tyler keep their positioning in a tie for first place atop the Lone Star Conference standings with a record of 18-4 in league play. UT Tyler and Oklahoma Christian now stand alone in the tie for first place at the top of the league standings.

UT Tyler will be back in action on Sunday at 1 p.m. on the road at St. Edward's.
