DENTON, TEXAS – UT Tyler volleyball picked up a road win over Texas Woman's on Friday night behind quality offensive nights from
Brylee Peterson and
Shaye Koski as well as solid play late in sets three and four.
Peterson hit .333 on the night with 14 kills on 33 swings and Koski 13 kills on 40 swings to provide the bulk of the offensive production for UT Tyler. Senior Maiya Peña added nine kills on 16 swings without an attacking error for a .563 percentage as well.
The Patriots closed out set three on a 5-2 run and then overcame set point in the fourth set to win 26-24 and snap a two-game losing skid. UT Tyler totaled 50 kills on the night, hitting just .181, but capitalized on 14 service errors for the Pioneers.
Freshman
Bella Briceno notched 17 digs for a defensive unit that totaled 74 for the night. Setter
Adeline Ortman registered 42 assists and 14 digs for her eighth double-double of the 2023 season.
UT Tyler pulled ahead in the opening frame with a key 4-0 run at the 17-17 mark and closed the first set out with a 25-20 victory. Texas Woman's responded with a 25-18 victory in set two that featured five straight unanswered points to close out the win and tie the match at 1-1.
It was UT Tyler, however, who would prove better in the late stages of the third and fourth sets in route to victory. The Patriots jumped ahead 2-1 in the match with a 25-21 win in the third frame that featured a 7-3 UT Tyler run to close out the victory.
Set four was a back-and-forth battle once again before UT Tyler seized final control of the set and the match with three straight points to overcome the aforementioned set point at 24-23 for Texas Woman's.
The win snaps a two-game losing streak for the Patriots and moves their overall record to 11-9 on the year and 5-4 in Lone Star Conference play.
The Patriots will be back in action tomorrow afternoon at Midwestern State at 2 p.m.
