#7 Patriots Set for Two in Centennial State

The Patriots head north for a pair of key in-region matchups with CSU Pueblo and Colorado Christian as they look to continue their strong start to the season.

LAST TIME OUT
 
Last weekend saw #7 UT Tyler take on the CCA Division II Canadian Tip Off Classic in Langley, British Columbia, Canada. The Patriots finished the weekend 2-1, with dominant wins over Simon Fraser and Alaska Fairbanks. The lone setback came against Central Washington, who held on for a narrow three point win on Sunday afternoon.
 
As a team, the Patriots averaged 67 points per game while outscoring opponents by an average of 14.7 points per game. They forced an average of 19 turnovers per game and averaged nine steals per contest as their defensive pressure ramped up its intensity.
 
Tina Machalova also enjoyed a stellar week, as she was named to the All-Tournament First Team after averaging 17 points per game on 54.8% shooting and snagging 4.7 rebounds per game.
 
NATIONAL ATTENTION
 

At the end of the 2022-2023 season, the Patriots were ranked #14 in the WBCA Top 25 Poll to round out the season of success. On October 31, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association released their preseason poll, and the Patriots were ranked #7. That is the highest ranking since all the way back on November 29, 2016.
 
THE LSC PRESEASON POLL
 

The Patriots were picked third in the preseason edition of the Lone Star Conference Poll, their highest since entering the conference. Angelo State took the number one spot, while Texas Woman's slotted in at number two.
 
For the Patriots, they earned 627 points overall and nine first place votes, also their first since joining the the conference. Meagan Mendazona was named to the Lone Star Conference Preseason Players to Watch list, and Grace Foster and Sawyer Lloyd earned Co-Preseason Player of the Year honors.
 
PATRIOTS NOTES AND TRENDS
 
  • UT Tyler finished the 2022-2023 year at 27-8 and 18-4 in LSC play.
  • The program finished a perfect 11-0 on their home floor inside the Herrington Patriot Center. On the road the team was 11-5 and they went 5-3 on neutral site courts.
  • The Patriots return nearly every contributor from last season's teams, including three All-LSC players and three NCAA All-South Central Region Tournament team members.
  • The Patriots leading scorer (Destini Whitehead, 12.6 PPG), leading rebounder (Lovisa Hevinder, 6.4 RPG), assist leader (Frances King, 95), steal leader (Montse Gutierrez, 72), and blocks leader (Ella Bradley, 23) all make their return for the 2023-2024 season.
  • The Patriots are now 3-0 in season openers since head coach Rebecca Alvidrez became head coach, and are 9-2 overall in season openers dating back to the 2013-2014 season.
  • In non-conference play last season, the Patriots finished 5-2 overall. Under coach Alvidrez, the Patriots are 12-4 over the last two seasons in those games.
  • On their home floor, the Patriots are a combined 22-4 over the last two seasons, including a perfect 11-0 in 2022-2023.
  • The Patriots are 9-5 over the last three seasons in neutral site games.
  • Head coach Rebecca Alvidrez is now 57-37 in her career as a head coach and 48-18 in two seasons at UT Tyler.
  • Tina Machalova has started the season on fire, averaging 17 points per game and 4.7 rebounds per game on 54.8% from the field.
  • As a team, the Patriots are averaging 67 points per game while shooting 42% from the field and are forcing 19 turnovers a game. They are holding opponents to just 32.2% from the field and 29.9% from beyond the arc.
 
THUNDERWOLVES NOTES AND TRENDS
 
  • CSU Pueblo is currently 0-2 to start their season after falling to #12 Azusa Pacific and #17 Union in the D2CCA Tip Off Classic in Lubbock, Texas.
  • The Thunderwolves went 14-15 during the 2022-2023 season and fell in the quarterfinals of the RMAC tournament to Regis.
  • This season they are averaging 61.5 points per game on 35.2% shooting from the floor. They have made 28.9% of their three point attempts, and are snagging 39.5 rebounds per game while picking up 10.5 steals per game.
  • Individually, Alisha Little leads the Thunderwolves with 16 points per game. She is shooting an even 40% from the floor while snagging nine rebounds, two steals, and two and a half blocks per contest.
  • Tommie Johnson leads the Thunderwolves and is in the midst of his fifth season at the helm. He holds a career record of 48-58, all with CSU Pueblo.
  • These two teams have matched up just one time, that came last season at the Carpet Tech Classic in Lubbock, Texas. There, the Patriots came away with a 63-48 win to open the 2022-2023 season.
 
COUGARS NOTES AND TRENDS
 
  • Colorado Christian will begin their season this weekend with Lubbock Christian and #7 UT Tyler for the second consecutive season.
  • In 2022-2023, the Cougars finished at 10-18 overall and 6-16 in RMAC play. They picked up wins against CSU Pueblo, UT Permian Basin, UT Tyler, and Fort Lewis during the season.
  • As a team during last season, Colorado Christian averaged 67.4 points per game while shooting 40% from the floor and 31.8% from deep. They grabbed 39 rebounds per game and averaged seven and a half steals per game.
  • The two top scorers from last season make their return in Maggie Phipps and Dasiya Jones. Phipps scored 11.5 points per game on 34.2% shooting, while Jones averaged 9.8 points per game on 42.2% shooting.
  • Diane Thompson is set to enter her third year as head coach this season. She holds a record of 19-36 over her first two seasons, both with the Cougars.
  • The two teams have met just once before, also at the Carpet Tech Classic in Lubbock, Texas last season. In that contest, the Cougars took home a 71-62 victory to hand the Patriots their first loss of the 2022-2023 season.
