Early Lead Propels #2 UT Tyler to Sweep

The UT Tyler softball team scored five runs in their first two trips to the plate and used big days from Tatum Goff and Courtney Plocheck to take down Cameron for the series sweep

TYLER, TEXAS - #2 UT Tyler built an early lead and cruised to a 7-1 win to close out the series sweep over Cameron on Wednesday afternoon.
 
The Patriots jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first two innings, benefitting from a handful of free bases issued by the Aggies, and then rode another quality outing from junior Tatum Goff to what is now their tenth win in a row. Junior Courtney Plocheck totaled three RBI for a third consecutive game after finishing the afternoon 2-for-3 at the plate.
 
Plocheck finished the series against Cameron 7-for-10 with nine RBI, three doubles and three runs scored to lead the UT Tyler offense.
 
The Deer Park, Texas native got the scoring started on Wednesday afternoon with an RBI infield single that plated sophomore JT Smith, who advanced on-base in all four trips to the plate in the ballgame with three walks and a hit by pitch. A wild pitch in the ensuing at-bat allowed sophomore Cassidi Mullen to score to make it 2-0.
 
A hit-by-pitch in the next at-bat loaded the bases for junior Audrey Escamilla, who drew a walk for the third run of the inning. Sophomore Sam Schott drove in the fourth run on a groundout to second to cap off a 4-0 advantage for the Patriots at the end of one.
 
Plocheck put across the fifth run for UT Tyler in the bottom of the second, scoring Smith once again on a sac fly to leftfield after Smith walked on as the leadoff batter in the frame. Goff retired the first eight batters in order heading into the top of the third, and then worked around a two-out single to keep the 5-0 lead in-tact.
 
The Patriots loaded the bases again in the bottom of the fourth on singles from junior Michelle Arias and Plocheck sandwiched around Smith's third walk of the ballgame, and got their sixth answered run on a two-out walk by Farr.
 
Cameron put their only run across on a two-out solo homer in the top of the sixth, before Plocheck capped off her outstanding day and series with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the sixth that scored Arias to make it 7-1.
 
Arias joined Plocheck with the other two hits on the day, finishing the afternoon 2-for-3 with a run scored.
 
Senior Shea O'Leary took over the in the top of the seventh for Goff and retired all three batters to put the finishing touches on the series sweep for UT Tyler.
 
Goff went 6.0 innings to move to 8-0 on the year with the win, and induced 12 flyouts and five groundouts in the ballgame.
 
The Patriots move to 13-1 on the year and 6-0 in Lone Star Conference play with the victory.
 
They will hit the road for this weekend's series at (RV) Angelo State with games schedule for a 1 p.m. start on Saturday and Sunday.
