UT Tyler Drops Newman in Neutral Site Contest

Both tennis programs came away with strong victories as the Patriots women have now won five matches in a row and the men have won their last four.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DURANT, OKLAHOMA – UT Tyler tennis seems to have found their rhythm, and they continued their strong run of form on Saturday afternoon with a sweep of Newman.

The UT Tyler women's team has hit their stride in a big way over the last couple of weeks, and that showed off in a big way on Saturday as they came away with a perfect 7-0 sweep.

Leading off in doubles, the Patriots dropped just two total games in their three matches combined, as Akshaya Suresh / Allison Schwartz looked completely dominant in a 20 minute 6-0 win.

The combinations of Brooklyn Ross / Violetta Khisamova and Tanvhikaa Saravanan / Kanika Sivaraman looked almost as dominant, coming away with 6-1 victories that took just 22 minutes to finish.

Heading into singles with a 1-0 lead, the Patriots kept digging for even more dominance, and Khisamova led the charge with a 39 minute 6-0, 6-0 straight sets win. Schwartz followed just 10 minutes later, as she dropped just one game over her straight set win by scores of 6-1, 6-0.

That gave UT Tyler a big 3-0 lead, and the match would fall into the hands of Sivaraman in the #6 slot to try and close it out. She would fall behind 2-0 in the first set, but responded with six straight game wins to earn a 6-2 set win. She kept that momentum rolling into set number two, and delivered another 6-2 win to earn the match point for the Patriots.

The Patriots would finish out their respective matches, and Suresh connected on a singles win in the #5 slot after claiming set wins of 6-2 and 6-3. She would be followed by Saravanan in slot #2, who claimed wins of 6-3, 6-4 to keep the Patriots perfect on the day.

The final win of the day came in the number one slot, as Brooklyn Ross was the only Patriots player to be pushed to a tiebreaker. After dropping the first set 7-5, Ross came back in a huge way with a 6-2 win to even the match. In the tiebreaker, it was all Ross, who came away with a solid 10-8 win to complete the 7-0 sweep and give the women their fifth win in a row.

Over in the men's match, the Patriots took a 1-0 lead as they claimed the doubles point over Newman. Jonas Dixon and Carel Wessel led off the action, claiming a 16 minute 6-0 win in slot #2. Newman would answer in the #3 slot, coming away with their own quick 6-1 win.

That set up the doubles point to be decided by the #1 slot, and Joaquin Bianchi and Gonzalo Fernandez Gil never trailed on their way to a 6-3 win and to give the Patriots the 1-0 lead.

Over in the singles portion of the match, Bianchi would continue his strong form, coming away with a 6-0, 6-2 win in which he never trailed. Right behind Bianchi was Jordi Garcia Portell, who claimed his own straight sets win after winning 6-3, 6-0.

The Jets would get themselves on the board in the #6 slot, as Amir Sanaei would narrowly fall in the second set by a score of 7-5 after losing set one 6-1.

Needing just one match to close out the win, Fernandez Gil stepped forward in the number two singles slot and delivered a 6-3, 6-4 straight sets win. Fernandez Gil trailed for just one game in the entirety of the match, and his match officially gave the Patriots the sweep on the weekend.

With the team match under wraps, both Wessel and Yudai Watanabe would finish out their respective matches, with Wessel earning the three set win and Watanabe narrowly dropping his third set.

That meant the final score for the UT Tyler men would go to 5-2, giving them their fourth consecutive win.

UT Tyler now heads back to Tyler, Texas for their first match of the season on their home court as they host Mississippi College on March 5th at Summers Tennis Center.
