TOPEKA, KANSAS – Calista Segura and
Abeni Kratzmeyer get to put their mark on the UT Tyler history books yet again as they each took down a school record on Saturday at the Washburn Open.
Calista Segura was part of a pack of four runners from the 2022 season in the school record book that were separated by less than a second, but Segura's run on Saturday gave her a 1.99 second advantage in the history of the event for UT Tyler. Her time of 2:18.28 ran herself into a fourth place finish in the 800 meters, finishing just 1.57 seconds behind first place and .23 seconds ahead of the fifth place runner.
Kratzmeyer has already firmly cemented herself as one of the best pole vaulters, if not the best pole vaulter, in UT Tyler history. On Saturday afternoon, she extended her own school record mark by .01 meters to 3.92 meters. She cleared the first height in one jump, but took three to clear the height of 3.77 meters. That moved the bar to 3.92 meters, and Kratzmeyer was able to clear that mark on her third attempt to claim a third place finish and further cement her NCAA provisional mark.
Brooklyn House nearly joined the pair of Segura and Kratzmeyer with her own school record in the women's shot put. House launched the shot at 12.89 meters to finish just .04 meters behind her own school record. That throw came on her fifth attempt of the day and moved her up two spots into seventh place for the day.
Brandon Arenas came up big in the 60 meter hurdle prelims, as he ran a time of 8.3 seconds to squeak himself into the final by just .01 seconds. In the final, Arenas ran an 8.24 second time, the third fastest in school history, and earned a sixth place finish on the day.
Jack Gipson collected another top 15
th finish for UT Tyler on Saturday, this time in the 3000 meters. Gipson placed 15
th on the day in a time of 8:44.13 seconds which goes down as the second fastest mark in school history.
On the women's side of the 3000 meters, it was
Elayna Metzger who also posted the second fastest time in school history. Metzger ran a time of 10:58.04 to place 16
th overall on the day and less than half a second behind 15
th.
On Friday, it was
Ty McDaniel who put on a strong effort for UT Tyler as he earned a seventh place finish in the men's weight throw. His mark of 17.12 meters comes up .56 meters short of his own school record in the event. McDaniel hit the mark of 17.12 on two separate throws in the event, but was unable to clear that mark in his sixth and final throw.
Next up for UT Tyler Track & Field will be the Lone Star Conference Indoor Championships that will be held in two weeks at the Texas Tech Sports Performance Center in Lubbock, Texas. For the Patriots that allows them one final chance to solidify their provisional marks and qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships to be held March 10-11 in Norfolk, Virginia.
