TYLER, TEXAS – A second-half comeback came up just short as Texas A&M-Kingsville buried a game-winning shot with six seconds on the clock to steal a 58-57 win over UT Tyler on Thursday night.
Senior
Terrell Wilson converted a pair of free throw attempts with 31 seconds remaining to give UT Tyler a two-point lead at 57-55 before Texas A&M-Kingsville dribbled out the clock and opted for the game winning three-point attempt with six seconds remaining. The conversion on that attempt concluded a second half in which UT Tyler largely outplayed the Javelinas, outscoring Texas A&M-Kingsville by a 30-to-27 margin.
UT Tyler connected on seven of their first 12 shots of the second half to erase a 31-27 halftime deficit and took a 42-41 lead with 10:09 remaining in the game. The game remained a one-possession contest for the rest of the 10 minutes of play from that point forward.
Senior
Rashun Williams notched his sixth straight game of 15 or more points with 15 points on the night. Mohammed Diallo,
Terrell Wilson and
Hasaan Herrington each totaled eight points on a night in which UT Tyler went 23-for-59 (39.0 percent) from the field as a team.
Williams connected on a three-pointer with 1:54 remaining to make it 53-51 before a three-point play from the Javelinas combined with an additional two free throws flipped the advantage back to a 55-53 advantage for Texas A&M-Kingsville. Williams tied the game on the next possession with 1:23 left with a jump shot on Wilson's seventh assist of the night to make it 55-55.
The Patriots forced a turnover and then Wilson drew a foul and converted both free throw attempts to make it 57-55 with 31 seconds left. Texas A&M-Kingsville connected on the game winning shot with six seconds left to bring the game to it's 58-57 final.
Wilson added three steals to his seven assists and eight points, while Williams led the Patriots with nine rebounds on the night. UT Tyler out-rebounded Texas A&M-Kingsville by a 40-to-29 final margin.
UT Tyler will honor a trio of seniors in
Rashun Williams, Mohammed Diallo and
Milan Szabo prior to tip on Saturday afternoon. The Patriots will take on Texas A&M International at 3 p.m.
