Box Score 2 TYLER, TEXAS - #7 UT Tyler men's tennis came away with a huge 7-0 win and #45 UT Tyler women's tennis finished off a 6-1 win on Friday at the Summers Tennis Center.
For the #7 ranked men's program, they looked as dominant as they have all season long, winning every match in straight sets and never going to a tiebreaker.
In doubles,
Joaquin Bianchi and
Carel Wessel kicked off the action with a strong 6-1 win in just 24 minutes. Five minutes later,
Gonzalo Fernandez Gil and
Egor Shestakov came through with a 6-3 doubles win to earn the doubles point for the Patriots.
Jordi Garcia Portell and
Jonas Dixon also completed a solid 6-4 win themselves to sweep the doubles matches.
Leading 1-0, action moved over to singles, where Fernandez Gil took just over one hour to complete a straight set win of 6-1, 6-1 to move the Patriots ahead 2-0.
Shortly after, Bianchi in the #2 slot gave up just two more games to his opponent, as he won by scores of 6-2, 6-2. In slot #3, Wessel rolled by scores of 6-2, 6-3 to put the Patriots on match point after just over an hour of singles play.
In the #4 position, Garcia Portell looked to close out the match, and he never trailed in set one on the way to a 6-4 win. In set two, his opponent jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, but Garcia Portell bounced back by winning six of the next eight games, including the last two consecutively, to come away with another 6-4 set win and earn the final point necessary for victory.
In the #5 slot,
Yudai Watanabe joined the party with his own 6-3, 6-2 win that took just 39 minutes to complete. Dixon in the #6 position followed in his footsteps with a 6-3, 6-1 win in just 29 minutes, and the Patriots completed the 7-0 sweep.
Over on the women's side, they had similar levels of success in their doubles matches, as
Chloe Dix and
Allison Schwartz took just 23 minutes to dispatch their opponents by a score of 6-1.
Brooklyn Ross and
Violetta Khisamova followed just behind, as they scored a 6-2 win to give the Patriots the two wins necessary for the doubles point. Not to be outdone,
Tanvikhaa Saravanan and
Kanika Sivaraman came away with a 6-4 win of their own to sweep the doubles maches.
Moving to singles, the action began with Schwartz in the #4 slot as she came away with a dominant 6-0, 6-4 win to move the Patriots to a 2-0 lead. Saravanan followed shortly after with a straight sets win of 6-2, 6-4, and UT Tyler quickly found themselves at match point.
In the #1 slot, it was
Brooklyn Ross who found herself with the chance to close out the match. After a dominant 6-1 victory to go ahead 1-0 in sets, the Mustangs bounced back with a 6-2 win of their own to force a tiebreaking third set. In that set, it was Ross who again found her stride, and delivered a 6-1 win to close out the match in favor of the Patriots.
In the #3 and #5 slots, Khisamova and Sivaraman would each pick up wins of their own to lead to the eventual 6-1 final score. In that #3 slot, Khisamova was forced into a tiebreaker in set one, but came away victorious, and followed with a big 6-1 win. Sivaraman split the first two sets with her opponent, but came through in the clutch in the third set tiebreaker by a score of 10-8 to clinch her point.
Both teams will now pack their bags and head east for a spring break trip that will see them play four matches in five days as they take on West Alabama, Auburn Montgomery, Young Harris, and Lee. The first of those matches will come on March 12 at 11 a.m. as they battle it out with West Alabama.
