MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA – UT Tyler tennis opened up their spring break trip on Monday as #7 men's tennis ran away from the Warhawks and #45 women's tennis came up just short in a tough match.
On the men's side, they got off to a strong start in doubles as
Gonzalo Fernandez Gil and
Egor Shestakov came away with a 6-3 win in slot one and
Carel Wessel and
Joaquin Bianchi rolled to a 6-2 win to quickly claim the doubles point and a 1-0 lead.
Over in singles, Fernandez Gil would continue his dominant form, delivering a 6-1, 6-1 straight sets win to give the Patriots their second point. Immediately following him was Bianchi in slot number one, as he came away with his own 6-4, 6-2 straight sets win to move the Patriots to match point after just two singles matches.
Shestakov in slot number three would be the man for the job, as he came away with a 6-4, 6-3 win to claim the fourth and final point necessary for a Patriots win.
The fifth and final win of the day came in slot six, as
Yudai Watanabe battled back after dropping the first set 6-3, to win the second set 6-4 and force a tiebreaker. In that tiebreaker, Watanabe never looked back on his way to a 10-5 win and earning the Patriots another win.
The win marks the eighth in a row for the men as they head into a big pair of matchups against two top 40 ranked teams on Wednesday and Thursday in Young Harris and Lee.
Over on the women's side, the Patriots suffered a 6-0 setback in doubles slot one and then a 6-3 battle from
Tanvikhaa Saravanan and
Kanika Sivaraman came up just short to allow the Warhawks to take the doubles point.
Over in singles,
Brooklyn Ross battled tightly in her match before dropping a close first set 7-6. In the second set, she would again battle tough, but would drop the set 6-2 to give Auburn Montgomery their second point.
The Warhawks picked up another point in slot number three, and the Patriots found themselves on the ropes.
A stroke of luck found their side, as
Allison Schwartz battled back from a 7-5 first set loss to a 6-0 win in set number two. Unfortunately, her opponent would have to retire from the match, and Schwartz earned the first point of the match for UT Tyler.
The Warhawks would go on to claim the last three matches of the day, as Saravanan battled closely to a 6-2, 7-6 defeat in slot two, Sivaraman came up just short in sets of 7-5, 7-5, and
