TYLER, TEXAS - #4 UT Tyler scored five runs in the bottom of the 11
th inning to complete an improbable 8-7 comeback win over (RV) Oklahoma Christian on Sunday afternoon.
Oklahoma Christian took the lead twice in extra innings in the 10
th and 11
th innings, but UT Tyler answered the call on both occasions, the latter of which on a game-tying grand slam from senior
Caitlyn Wells. That blast negated four unearned runs for the Lady Eagles in the top of the 11
th and set the stage for sophomore
JT Smith to plate the game-winning run three batters later to secure a fifth straight Lone Star Conference sweep for the Patriots.
UT Tyler had nine of their 15 hits of the ballgame in what would be their last two trips to the plate in the 10
th and 11
th innings.
Oklahoma Christian scored runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 2-0 lead before back-to-back solo homers from
Courtney Plocheck and
Michelle Arias tied the game up at two runs apiece in the bottom of the fifth. The game turned into a battle of relief pitching from there, as graduate student
Shea O'Leary took over for starter
Tatum Goff in the top of the fourth and worked out of a jam with two runners aboard by allowing just a single run.
O'Leary then retired the next 16 batters she faced before running into trouble in the top of the 10
th. Oklahoma Christian scored the go-ahead run on an RBI single and then loaded the bases against sophomore
Kaylee Davis, who kept the game at 3-2 with a flyout to center.
Smith provided the first of her heroics in the bottom half of the frame to tie the game for a second time with an RBI single up the middle that scored pinchrunner
Berlyn Grossman to make it 3-3.
Oklahoma Christian scored four runs on their ensuing trip to the plate off just one hit, capitalizing on a pair of fielding mistakes by the Patriots. Plocheck and sophomore
Michelle Arias got the rally started in the bottom of the 11
th with back-to-back singles. A hit-by-pitch on
Maddie Melton loaded the bases with one out for Wells, who drilled the grand slam over the centerfield wall to tie the game at 7-7.
The Patriot offense didn't stop there, as a walk from
Hannah Kinkade and an ensuing double from
Amanda Marek put runners on second and third for Smith. Smith delivered once again, this time in walk-off fashion, and scored Kinkade on an RBI single for the winning run.
Goff was credited with the win after reentering the game in the top of the 11
th for Davis, and now sits 22-0 on the year. O'Leary struckout eight Lady Eagles in her 6.1 innings of relief work.
Smith and Plocheck both tallied three hits in the game, while Wells led the club with four RBI on the tying grand slam.
The win is the 11
th in a row for UT Tyler and brings their overall record to 34-4 on the year and a 22-2 mark in Lone Star Conference play.
The Patriots will travel to Portales, N.M. for their next series on Mar. 31
st and April 1
