PORTALES, N.M. - #3 UT Tyler hit six homers between the two games and used complete games from
Tatum Goff and
Shea O'Leary to dominate Eastern New Mexico in 5-0 and 10-2 wins on Saturday afternoon on the road.
Junior
Maddie Melton hit three of the homers and
JT Smith an additional two on an afternoon in which the Patriots built early leads and never looked back in both contests. Melton and Smith hit a pair of solo shots in game one and then watched as sophomore
Sam Schott put one over the fence for a three-run blast to bring the score to it's eventual 5-0 final.
Melton hit two homers in the game two victory in which the Patriots ran up 10 runs in their first four trips to the plate to post win no. 13 in a row in a five-inning run-rule.
The three homers in game one were all the Patriots needed at the plate, as Goff tossed 7.0 complete innings while allowing just three hits to move to 23-0 on the year. The Rusk, Texas native and the Division II leader in wins struckout four and kept the Greyhound lineup off the board for her seventh shutout victory of 2023.
Smith led the game off with a solo homer, Melton doubled the lead to 2-0 in the fourth with her solo blast, and Schott put the finishing touches on the victory with her three-run blast in the fifth that made it 5-0. Three of the four UT Tyler hits in the game left the yard, while sophomore
Cassidi Mullen added the other hit to the effort and scored on the Schott homer alongside Smith.
Game two was an offensive showcase for the Patriots, as they scored four in their first trip to the plate and then a pair of runs in the second, third and fourth to run out to a quick 10-2 advantage. Junior
Courtney Plocheck got the game started with an RBI single in the first that scored Schott, and then came around to score alongside classmate
Michelle Arias on Melton's second three-run homer of the day that made it 4-0.
Smith followed suit with Melton, adding her second homer of the day in the second to make it 6-0. Junior
Amanda Marek kept the scoring going with a two-RBI single in the third before Melton hit her third homer of the afternoon in the top of the fourth, a two-run blast that totaled the Patriot scoring at 10.
Melton went 2-for-3, joining Plocheck and Marek with multi-hits, and totaled five RBI in the game.
O'Leary rebounded after a two-run first inning for Eastern New Mexico, scattering seven hits while allowing just a pair of earned runs to collect the win and move to 9-2 on the year.
UT Tyler moves to 36-4 on the year and 24-2 in Lone Star Conference play with the wins.
The Patriots will look for Lone Star Conference sweep number six in a row in tomorrow afternoon's series finale at 12 p.m.
