Patriots Sweep DBU to Stay Hot in LSC Play

UT Tyler men’s tennis moved their LSC record to 4-0 and the women’s tennis program moved to 3-1 after dominant efforts on Tuesday afternoon.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TYLER, TEXAS – UT Tyler tennis wasted no time in dispatching DBU on Tuesday as both programs rolled to convincing wins on their home courts.

The Patriots men delivered a perfect 7-0 win on Tuesday that featured wins in every single match as they completely swept DBU.

That sweep started in with the doubles matches, and Jonas Dixon and Jordi Garcia Portell combined for an 18 minute long 6-0 win to move the Patriots ahead. Just six minutes later, Joaquin Bianchi and Carel Wessel came away with a 6-1 win of their own to secure the doubles point. In the #1 doubles slot, Gonzalo Fernandez Gil and Egor Shestakov added their own win at 6-4 to sweep the three doubles matches.

With a 1-0 lead heading to singles, Wessel was the first man on the board as he took just over an hour to dispatch his opponent with a 6-2, 6-3 straight sets win. He was followed shortly by Shestakov, who came away with a 6-2, 6-3 straight sets win of his own to move the Patriots to match point.

Fernandez Gil would be the man to secure the match point, as he battled back after dropping the first set 6-4 with sets of 6-3, 6-2 to claim the win in #1 singles. Garcia Portell would close his match just behind Fernandez Gil, in scores of 6-4, 2-6, 7-5.

In the final two singles matches, Yudai Watanabe in the #5 slot secured yet another win for the Patriots with a 6-2, 6-4 thrashing of his opponent. That gave the Patriots six points, and Dixon would have the chance to claim the seventh in the #6 slot. He would come through, finishing his match with set scores of 6-3, 6-1 to secure a 7-0 sweep.

For the UT Tyler women, they would play host to #42 ranked DBU, and have to earn their win in a different fashion from the men.

In their match, DBU would take the doubles point in a set of marathon matches. After claiming the #1 doubles slot by a score of 6-3, DBU looked to have their eyes on a quick 1-0 lead, but Brooklyn Ross and Violetta Khisamova came up with a 7-5 set win to even the matches at 1-1. That left the first point up to the #3 slot, and after an hour and 15 minutes, it was DBU who came away with a dramatic 12-10 tiebreaker win to take a 1-0 lead.

That early lead would push the Patriots backs against the wall, but they responded quickly with a quick pair of wins thanks to Allison Schwartz and Khisamova. Schwartz came away with a dominant 6-2, 6-1 win, while Khisamova earned a 6-3, 6-2 straight sets win.

Just ten minutes later, it was Tanvikhaa Saravanan who finished off a 6-1, 6-4 straight sets win to suddenly put the Patriots at match point with a lead at 3-1.

The match came down to the number one singles slot, and Ross would see the first set go DBU's way at a score of 6-0. However, Ross bounced back with a 6-4 set win to even up her match. In the third set, Ross finished off the match with a 6-3 set win to earn the fourth point for the Patriots.

The final win of the day came in #5 singles for UT Tyler, as Akshaya Suresh delivered a 6-4, 6-3 win to give the Patriots their fifth point on the day.

Both teams will now get back to work on Friday morning, as they head to Lawton, Oklahoma for a matchup with Cameron. That match gets started at 10 a.m. on Friday and will be a pivotal match for both programs in their search for the LSC title.
