Patriots Tennis Rolls to Sweep Against UT Permian Basin

Both Patriots tennis programs caught fire on Thursday and delivered a pair of big wins to move to 1-0 in LSC competition.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TYLER, TEXAS – Both #7 Men's Tennis and #45 Women's Tennis came away with wins over UT Permian Basin to start their Lone Star Conference season 1-0 on Thursday.

Just two matches on the men's side would go into a third set tiebreaker as they dropped just one match on the day on their way to a convincing 6-1 win.

In doubles, Joaquin Bianchi and Carel Wessel got things going as they produced a strong 6-3 win that took just 35 minutes to get the Patriots just one match from closing out the doubles point. In the #1 slot, Gonzalo Fernandez Gil and Egor Shestakov paired up and produced a 6-4 win to claim the first point of the match.

Over in singles, it was all #7 UT Tyler as they rolled convincingly in the first three matches to get the four points necessary for the win. First out of the gates was Bianchi in the #1 slot, and he came away with a big 6-0, 6-4 straight sets win that seemed to set the tone for the rest of the match.

Just two minutes later, Fernandez Gil followed with a convincing 6-3, 6-2 win of his own, and the Patriots were on the doorstep with three points. That left the match in the hands of Shestakov in the #3 slot, and after a 6-3 set one win, was just one set away from claiming the win for the Patriots. In that second set, he would be pushed to an extra game, but claimed the win at 7-5 and the Patriots were victorious.

Two more matches would go #7 UT Tyler's way, as Jordi Garcia Portell and Yudai Watanabe each delivered wins in their matches.

Watanabe joined the party with another straight sets win, as he finished off his opponent with scores of 6-0, 7-5. Garcia Portell dropped the first set 6-3, but came right back with a 6-3 win of his own to force a tiebreaker. In that tiebreaker he would claim a 10-7 win to give the Patriots their sixth and final point.

For the #45 UT Tyler women's team, they would roll in all seven matches and run away to a 7-0 win after not being pushed to a tiebreaking third set in all of their matches.

In doubles, Allison Schwartz and Akshaya Suresh took just 19 minutes to claim a 6-0 win to move the Patriots closer to the doubles point. Brooklyn Ross and Violetta Khisamova followed in slot #2, and came away with a 6-2 win to give UT Tyler a 1-0 advantage heading into singles.

In those singles matches, Khisamova and Schwartz kept the speedy wins coming, as they dispatched their opponents in just 33 and 37 minutes to move the Patriots to a 3-0 lead. Khisamova won with scores of 6-1, 6-2, and Schwartz claimed a win with scores of 6-3, 6-2.

Needing one win to claim victory on the day, all eyes turned to Ross in the #1 slot, and she answered the call with big wins of 6-0 and 6-2 to claim victory.

The Patriots would continue their matches, and Tanvikhaa Saravanan continued her strong singles play with a 6-2 first set win. In set two, she would be pushed into a tiebreaker, the only one of the day for the Patriots, and hang on for a 7-6 win.

In the #6 slot, Kanika Sivaraman followed in her teammates footsteps and also delivered a strong 6-0, 6-2 win. That moved the Patriots to six points, and the seventh and final point came from Suresh, who battled her way to 6-1, 6-4 wins to complete the sweep of the Falcons.

Both programs will now have a quick turnaround for Friday morning as they welcome Western New Mexico to the Summers Tennis Center for their second LSC match of the season. Those matches will start at 10 a.m.
