MAGNOLIA, ARKANSAS – UT Tyler baseball picked up their 8
th win of the season against a top 25 ranked opponent on Wednesday night as they took down #6/#11 Southern Arkansas on the road.
The two teams would play a scoreless first inning as
Miles Clack worked a 1-2-3 inning to open up the ballgame in the bottom half. That opened up the opportunity for the Patriots offense, as
Lane Hutchinson ripped a one out double to right center to put a man in scoring position. Two batters later,
Nathan Carriere singled through the right side to score Hutchinson, and
Carson Cox barreled up a double down the left field line to score Carriere all the way from first.
Brayden Freeman came on to pitch the second inning, and after the first hitter got on due to a hit by pitch, struck out the next two batters before issuing a walk. Freeman held steady and induced a flyout to end the inning and any threat from the Muleriders.
In the top of the third,
Jordan Gochenour singled to leadoff the inning, and two batters later,
Ethan Bedgood hit a towering home run that landed well beyond the left field wall to double the Patriots lead to 4-0.
Austin Ochoa would single to left field, and both Hutchinson and
Adrian Minjares would be hit by a pitch to load the bases. Carriere walked home a run, and
Edward Ortiz followed suit by being hit by a pitch to plate another run. In his second at bat of the inning, Gochenour singled through the left side to bring home two more, and the lead stretched to 8-0.
In the third inning,
Julio Garcia stepped to the mound for the Patriots, and worked a lineout around a pair of singles. A sacrifice fly would plate the first run of the game for the Muleriders, but Garcia bounced back with a strikeout to end the inning.
Another hit by pitch allowed Ochoa to reach on the first at bat of the fourth, and Hutchinson drew a walk as well to put two on with no outs. A double play would move a runner to third, and Carriere reached on an error that brought home the run to make it 9-1.
Harrison Lee got the ball in the fourth, and the first two batters would bring home the first run of the inning after a double and a single led to a throwing error. Two batters later, the Muleriders would strike with a two run home run to cut the lead down to five. Another double followed, and two batters later another throwing error would allow the final run of the inning to score before Lee got a flyout and a groundout for the final two outs.
The Patriots didn't score a run in the fifth or the sixth inning, and
Bryson Adair would allow just one baserunner as he worked a scoreless fifth inning on just 12 pitches, 10 of which were strikes.
In the bottom half of the sixth,
A.J. Irvin took to the mound, and after a flyout and a strikeout, a double would plate the sixth run of the game for Southern Arkansas and the lead was down to three.
After a scoreless top half of the seventh for UT Tyler,
Logan Henderson came on in a big spot in the seventh inning looking to hold off the Muleriders momentum. A leadoff single put a man on, but Henderson quickly wiped the slate clean with a ground ball double play followed by a flyout to center field to end the inning and hand it right back to the offense.
In the eighth, Hutchinson led off with a double and Minjares drew a walk. Carriere was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Cox reached on a fielder's choice to drive home the first run. In stepped Ortiz, and he drove a single up the middle to plate the second run and expand the lead back out to five runs.
Dylan Blomquist came on to pitch the eighth and the Muleriders got to him with a pair of doubles to plate a run. Blomquist battled right back, getting a flyout, a groundout, and then a bigtime strikeout to end the threat and keep the Patriots out in front.
In the ninth inning,
Kaston Mason drew a leadoff walk before
Tres Thomas pinch ran. Thomas immediately stole second, and then moved to third on an error. Bedgood dropped in a sacrifice fly to plate Thomas, and two walks put a pair of runners on with two outs. Carriere would put the pressure on with a fielder's choice that forced a throwing error, and the Patriots would score another run to take a 13-7 lead.
Garrett Arredondo came on to pitch the ninth, and the Muleriders again created early momentum after a single and then a two run blast down the left field line. Again, the Patriots pitching would battle back, as Arredondo sat the next three hitters down in order with a groundout and a pair of strikeouts to end the ballgame.
Nine different Patriots took the mound in the game, each pitching exactly one inning.
Bryson Adair picked up his first career win in the Patriots victory after working a strong fifth inning that saw just one batter reach base.
Four different Patriots players picked up multiple hits, as Gochenour, Bedgood, Hutchinson, and Ortiz each reached that number. Five different Patriots had at least two RBI, led by
Ethan Bedgood who totaled three. Three different Patriots also drew at least two walks, led by
Lane Hutchinson who drew three.
