Box Score ARLINGTON, TEXAS – UT Tyler men's tennis will move on to the semifinal round of the Lone Star Conference Tournament after a dominant performance on Thursday over Western New Mexico.
The Patriots dominance began in doubles, as
Jonas Dixon and
Jordi Garcia Portell posted a 6-1 win in which they never trailed. Just a few minutes later, it was the combination of
Joaquin Bianchi and
Carel Wessel who followed suit, taking a 6-0 victory in dominant fashion to secure the doubles point and move the match over to singles.
In singles, the Patriots began their action by taking every single first set over their opponent. Bianchi won at 6-3,
Gonzalo Fernandez Gil at 6-4,
Egor Shestakov at 6-1, Wessel at 6-1, Garcia Portell at 6-2, and
Yudai Watanabe at 6-2.
That first set landslide led to a race to see which singles matches would end up being the deciding factors, and Wessel was the first man up in the #4 slot. Wessel strung together a 6-1, 6-2 straight sets win to give the Patriots two points.
Just three minutes later, it was Watanabe who finished off a 6-2, 6-1 straight sets win of his own and suddenly the Patriots were just one win away from taking the victory.
Egor Shestakov would be the player to send the Patriots onward, as he finished off a 6-1, 6-1 win to secure the fourth and final point. Shestakov ran out to 5-0 leads in both of his sets, and broke his opponents serve six different times.
UT Tyler now takes on #5 seed UAFS in the semifinal round, after the Lions took a dramatic 4-3 win over #4 seed Lubbock Christian.
That match is set to begin at 8:30 a.m. on Friday morning at the Arlington Tennis Center in Arlington, Texas.
