Aggies Take Down Patriots in LSC Tournament Finals

UT Tyler battled all day long in a close match that went down to the wire as the Aggies took the slim victory.

Box Score ARLINGTON, TEXAS – UT Tyler faced off with Cameron in the Lone Star Conference Tournament championship match and forced it to go all the way to the final singles match, but Cameron held the edge as they took the final by a score of 4-3.

In doubles, the Aggies ran out to the quick lead as they took #3 doubles by a score of 6-1 to put themselves just one win away from securing the doubles point. In slot #1, the Aggies battled back from deficits of 2-1 and 3-2 to take a 6-3 win and secure the 1-0 advantage heading into singles.

In singles matches, Egor Shestakov looked to be the first man on the board and tie up the score for the Patriots, and after a tiebreaker win in set one, took a 6-3 victory to secure a straight sets win and even up the match.

The Aggies battled back in the next match, and took #2 singles by scores of 6-4, 6-4 to take a 2-1 lead. That match would be the final one to finish in just two sets, as the two programs faced off in high level tennis to determine the final score.

Yudai Watanabe followed in Shestakov's footsteps to secure the second point of the day for the Patriots. After falling narrowly by a score of 7-5 in set one, Watanabe came right back with wins of 6-2, 6-2 to take the three set win and even the match.

In #1 singles, Joaquin Bianchi took a 6-2 win in his first set to take the early advantage, but the Aggies came back with a 6-4 win in set two to even the count at 1-1. In the third set, the two players would battle all the way to a 3-3 tie, but the Aggies took a 6-3 set win to put themselves up 3-2 and put the match on the line.

With the match in the balance, Jordi Garcia Portell fell 6-1 in the first set and the Aggies were ever closer to securing the win. In set two, Garcia Portell came right back with a 6-3 set win in which he never trailed to force a third set. In that third set, he continued to set the tone as he never trailed again on his way to a 7-5 win and evening the match at 3-3.

That left the entire match down to #4 singles, and Carel Wessel was locked in a tight battle from set one. The two players battled to ties of 3-3, 4-4, and 5-5 before Wessel finally took the final two games for a 7-5 win. In set two, Wessel took a 3-1 lead before the Aggies battled back to a 4-4 tie and then eventually a 6-4 win to tie the match at one set each. In set three, Wessel would jump out to a quick 3-1 lead, but the Aggies had the answer by taking the next five games consecutively to earn the 4-3 win overall.

For the Patriots, the loss snaps an 18 match winning streak and drops them to 19-2 on the year. They will now patiently await the NCAA Selection Show on Monday, April 24 at 7 p.m. as they look to qualify for the NCAA South Central Region Tournament for the second consecutive season.
