Offense, Bigtime Pitching Lead Patriots to Doubleheader Sweep over Cameron

The Patriots caught fire at the plate to support a strong day from the pitching staff as they take a commanding 3-0 series lead over the Aggies.

TYLER, TEXAS – UT Tyler scored 27 runs over two games and allowed just three in a dominant sweep over Cameron as they extend their series lead to 3-0 and remain steadily in third in the LSC standings.

GAME ONE

It took the Patriots exactly one inning to secure the lead, and they would never look back as they took home a 19-0 lead in the first game of the day.

Starter Miles Clack put on one of his best performances of the season, as he pitched all seven innings while allowing just four hits, two walks, and striking out nine hitters on his way to a complete game shutout.

In the first inning, Clack would get a flyout before allowing his first single of the game. He would pick off the runner on a big jump, and then got the groundout to end the inning to give the Patriots bats a chance to take control early.

Jordan Gochenour would lead off with a hit by pitch, and a single from Kaston Mason and another hit by pitch from Ethan Bedgood quickly loaded the bases. Austin Ochoa delivered an RBI single, and Lane Hutchinson drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. A walk from Adrian Minjares would load the bases again, and two runs would come around to score on an error. Two batters later, Edward Ortiz ripped a double down the line and the Patriots held a commanding 6-0 lead after one.

Clack would post six consecutive strikeouts over the next two innings, and the Patriots tacked on another run in the third with an RBI single from Ortiz that scored Nathan Carriere.

Clack allowed his second hit of the game in the fourth inning, but held the Aggies scoreless. Four more runs for the Patriots came around in the bottom half as Bedgood ripped a triple to plate Mason, Ochoa doubled home Bedgood, Ortiz drew a bases loaded walk, and Gochenour was hit by another pitch to score a run.

Four more runs would cross the plate in the bottom of the fifth for the Patriots as they would bat around for the third time in the game. Minjares drove in the first run on an RBI double, Hutchinson came around to score on a wild pitch, a triple from Carriere drove in another and Carson Cox drove in the final run of the inning with an RBI single.

Clack worked his fourth 1-2-3 inning of the game in the sixth, and the Patriots opened up the scoring yet again to the tune of four more runs. The Patriots batted around for the fourth time in the game as Dylan Blomquist, Cox, and Tres Thomas posted RBI's, and Brandon Nations scored on a throwing error.

With a commanding 19-0 lead, Clack stepped out to finish off the game in the seventh. He allowed two singles in the inning, but worked around them with two flyouts and a strikeout to end the game and the threat.

Six different Patriots recorded at least two hits, led by Edward Ortiz who went 3-for-4 with 4 RBI. Ortiz, Carriere, and Ochoa each had at least two RBI.

GAME TWO

In game two of the doubleheader, Cameron would take their first lead of the series in the top of the first. A leadoff double followed by a sacrifice bunt moved the runner over to third. A groundout to starter Brayden Freeman would drive the run home, and a 1-0 lead followed for the Aggies.

Two straight singles and a walk followed, and suddenly the Aggies were looking for a big first inning. A double into the right center field gap would plate all three runs, but upon appeal from the UT Tyler dugout, the runner was called out for missing first base and the inning was over with just one run scored.

Freeman would pitch the second inning, and after allowing a single he would induce the ground ball double play to wipe the bases. Two more singles followed, but Freeman got the groundout to end the inning.

Needed to produce some offense, Lane Hutchinson got this started with an infield single. A walk followed, and Cox dropped a sacrifice bunt to move the runners into scoring position. Edwart Ortiz doubled home the runs, and he moved to third on an single from Blake LaBuda. That brought up Jordan Gochenour, who hit a towering fly ball that dropped over the right field wall for a three run blast to give the Patriots a 5-1 lead.

Justin Schrader would be called on to relieve Freeman in the third, and the Aggies led off with a double before Schrader posted a strikeout. The Aggies would connect on a two run home run to left center field, and that cut the lead down to just two. Schrader battled back with a strikeout and a groundout to end the inning.

After a scoreless third for the Patriots offense, Schrader worked around a single with a groundout and flyout before LaBuda threw out the runner trying to steal second to end the inning.

Logan Henderson would come on in the fifth inning, and he posted a tremendous first inning with three straight strikeouts in just 10 pitches. He got a groundout to start the sixth before allowing his first hit. He got the next out on a fielder's choice, and then struck out the final hitter to keep the Aggies at bay.

Nathan Carriere led off the Patriots half of the sixth with a solo home run down the left field line, and three batters later Blomquist drove in another run on a fielder's choice. Kaston Mason delivered a single up the middle to plate a third run, and the Patriots held a big 8-3 lead.

Henderson would trot out for the final inning, and he struck out three straight batters swinging yet again to complete the three inning save and the Patriots win.

Justin Schrader picks up the win after going two innings and allowing two runs and three hits while posting two strikeouts.

Logan Henderson collected his second save of the year after allowing one hit and posting season highs in both innings pitched (3.0) and strikeouts (7).

Kaston Mason led the Patriots offense with two hits, while Jordan Gochenour collected a team high three RBI.

The Patriots will look for the series sweep tomorrow afternoon as they are scheduled for first pitch at 12 p.m. at Irwin Field.
