WHAT A SEASON
For the second consecutive year and in just year two of Division II postseason eligibility, UT Tyler men's tennis has advanced themselves into the NCAA Round of 16. The Patriots went undefeated in their LSC regular season matches, claiming their second LSC Regular Season title in the last three seasons. Additionally, the Patriots made their way all the way to the LSC Tournament finals before falling to Cameron 4-3.
RANKED ALL YEAR
The Patriots have received recognition all season long for their dominant run, and as such were ranked inside the top 10 for the final eight weeks of the ITA Rankings before the NCAA Tournament began. The Patriots ranked as high as second at one point, which is the highest ranking not just in the Division II era, but in the NCAA era as a whole for the program.
THE REMATCH
Last season, the Patriots squared off with Hawai'i Pacific in the Round of 16, and it was the Sharks who narrowly came away with the victory. The Sharks took the doubles point, but the Patriots battled back with wins in the #3 and #6 slots to put themselves in position for a comeback. However, the Sharks ultimately had the upper hand and came away with a 4-2 win.
THE SCOUTING REPORT
Hawai'i Pacific will head into this year's matchup with a record of 13-6 overall during the season. The Sharks made a spirited run in the PacWest Championship, defeating UH Hilo and Concordia University Irvine by scores of 4-1 before falling to Azusa Pacific in the championship match.
That big run led the Sharks to being picked for the NCAA West Regional tournament, where they took down Point Loma by a score of 4-1 to punch their ticket to the NCAA Round of 16.
From last year's team, the Sharks will return five of the six players from singles and five of the six players from doubles. Of those players, only #1 singles player Jordi Walder has not returned.
The Sharks are led by Jakub Beran and Benjamin Loccisano in doubles, as they typically play the #1 slot. In singles, it is Robin Sanz who occupies the #1 slot.
NEXT UP
Following the NCAA Round of 16 matchup, the winner of the match will then move on to play the winner of #2 Columbus State and #15 Le Moyne. That match will take place on May 12 at 6 p.m. CDT.
