Fernandez Gil Named UT Tyler Athletic Department Male Athlete of the Year

TYLER, TEXAS – Senior Gonzalo Fernandez Gil of UT Tyler men's tennis has been named the 2022-23 Male Athlete of the Year by the UT Tyler athletic department as part of the UT Tyler Athletics Annual Awards.
 
Fernandez Gil capped off his Patriot career with a sensational senior season, earning ITA All-American honors after finishing the season ranked 16th in the ITA Singles Rankings and 13th in the ITA Doubles Rankings. The Majadahonda, Spain native finished the spring with a 19-2 record in singles and a 14-5 record in doubles in route to being named the ITA South Central Region Senior Player of the Year.
 
The Male Athlete of the Year Award is presented annually to the male student-athlete who is considered the top performer of the year across the department. The UT Tyler Athletics Annual Awards are nominated and voted upon by the department's head coaches.
 
Fernandez Gil went a perfect 7-0 against Lone Star Conference competition in both singles and doubles play, leading to recognition as the Lone Star Conference Player of the Year and Lone Star Conference Senior of the Year. He was an All-Lone Star Conference First Team selection in both singles and doubles for a second consecutive season.
 
He finishes his career within the top five in program history in both singles and doubles wins, as a two-time ITA Cup qualifier and a six-time All-Lone Star Conference selection.
 
For his combined efforts on the court and in the classroom, Fernandez Gil was named as a CSC Second Team Academic All-American, to the CSC Academic All-District Team and to the Lone Star Conference All-Academic Team for a second-consecutive season.
 
The UT Tyler men's tennis capitalized on the success of Fernandez Gil and others, advancing to the NCAA Division II Round-of-16 for a second-straight season in each of the first two seasons of postseason eligibility for the program at the Division II level. The Patriots went 20-3 in 2023, rising to a program-best no. 2 national ranking in the ITA rankings. UT Tyler went 8-0 in Lone Star Conference play for their second LSC regular season title.
