Fast Start Helps Secure Win in Lone Star Conference Opener for UT Tyler

Freshman Shaye Koski went for a third straight double-double and the Patriots began Lone Star Conference play on a 15-3 run to defeat Cameron

TYLER, TEXAS – UT Tyler started fast in their Lone Star Conference victory and moved to 1-0 in league play with a 3-1 (25-9, 25-20, 15-25, 25-14) win over Cameron on Friday night inside the Herrington Patriot Center.

UT Tyler started Lone Star Conference play with a 15-3 run in the first set and rode that momentum to victory in their first LSC match of the weekend on their home floor. Freshman Shaye Koski went for her third straight double-double with team highs in both kills (15) and digs (24), and Jackie Velzis (12) and Brielle Worley (11) both reached double-digit kill totals for an offense that hit .286 as a team.

Setter Jenna White notched a double-double as well, totaling 26 assists on the night and 10 digs. The junior helped manufacture an offense that was potent in both the first and fourth sets, registering team hitting percentages north of .400 in both frames.

The Patriots put down 11 kills on just 21 swings in the opening frame and limited Cameron to just five kills to run away with a 25-9 opening set victory. The 15-3 lead to start the match turned into a 21-6 advantage and was then closed by four straight UT Tyler points to jump ahead 1-0.

Cameron settled into a second set that saw the Aggies jump ahead 17-14 before Worley and the Patriot offense closed out the 25-20 win with kills in the final 10 points of the frame. The Amarillo, Texas native put down five of those kills throughout that 11-3 Patriot run and finished the match with 11 kills on 33 swings.

10 unanswered Cameron points in the third set coming out of the 11-10 mark in favor of the Patriots paved the way for the lone Aggie set win of the night.

UT Tyler reasserted themselves offensively in what would be the fourth and final set with 19 kills on 39 swings to hit .462 as a team in the final frame. Velzis totaled five kills in that frame alone and hit .556 for the night with 12 kills on just 18 swings for a .556 hitting percentage.

Libero Addison Evans notched 20 kills for a defensive unit that won the dig battle in the match by an 81-to-65 margin.

UT Tyler went for 59 kills as a team on 147 swings and limited Cameron to just 37 kills on the night and a .152 hitting percentage.

UT Tyler will host #3 West Texas A&M for Youth Day on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. back inside the Herrington Patriot Center.
