Patriots Battle to Dramatic 2-2 Draw in Odessa

Two goals in the final five minutes salvaged a key draw as the Patriots hang tough in the LSC standings.

ODESSA, TEXAS – Two UT Permian Basin goals were the early story, but UT Tyler came back in dramatic fashion to salvage a point and make it three consecutive results.

UT Permian Basin put themselves ahead quickly by coming out on the offensive. They posted five shots over a five minute stretch from the 12th minute forward, including three of those going on goal. That early offense finally paid off in the 31st minute, as the Falcons finally got one past the brick wall of Emily Clark.

Clark would make yet another save in the 37th minute, but the Falcons continued their pressure as they picked up a second goal in the 42nd minute to expand their lead out to 2-0 just before the halftime whistle.

That offensive pressure from UT Permian Basin showed in the stat sheet, as they outshot the Patriots 9-5 in the first half and forced Clark into four different saves over the first 45 minutes.

As offensive as the Falcons were in the first half, the Patriots were just as offensive minded in the second half as they got their wheels turning with some early pressure. That pressure would turn into a 6-1 advantage in shots in the second half and a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Melissa Oliveira put one shot on goal in the 53rd minute, but it was saved. Another shot on goal came from Brooke Mullins in the 67th minute, but it too was saved. Mackenzee Stokes took her turn in the 80th minute, but the Falcons keeper continued to stand her ground.

Maddie Higgins finally broke the spell in the 86th minute to cut the deficit in half with just over four minutes remaining. Her goal came from a free kick just outside the box as the ball was deflected around in the box before she struck a laser that found the back of the net.

In the 90th and final minute, it was Stokes who picked up the game tying goal as Alexia Moreira sent in a gorgeous pass right into the middle of the box that fed Stokes in stride. Stokes would rattle the crossbar, but the ball ultimately deflected over the line and guaranteed a point for the Patriots.

Higgins and Stokes each score their second goal of the season in the contest, as Stokes has now scored in each of the last two games.

For UT Tyler, they will now host Texas A&M International at Citizens 1st Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex on Wednesday, October 4th.
