LAST TIME OUT

UT Tyler dropped both games in the Hoops in Hawaii Classic at the Shark Tank in Honolulu, Hawaii prior to the Holiday break. The Patriots dropped a 51-49 decision to Alaska Anchorage on Dec. 17th and then an 88-61 loss at the hands of Chaminade the next day.

WHAT COACH MOSER IS SAYING

On the experience the Hawaii trip provided the team... "We felt like we really came together as a group in Hawaii. We continued to gain valuable experience which we hope will sooner or later help us finish games with confidence."

On what he hopes the team gained with the extended holiday break... "These guys really enjoy each other and they continue to work hard to chase wins. The break provided us all with the opportunity to reflect on what we did poorly the first half and areas each of us in the program need to improve on"

About Oklahoma Christian and UAFS as opponents for the start of the new year... "Both Oklahoma Christian and UAFS play hard, are well coached and will be tough opponents. We're excited to get the second half started on our home field and want to get it started out on the right foot."

PATRIOT NEWS AND NOTES

- UT Tyler will return to conference play this weekend against Oklahoma Christian and UAFS after wrapping up non-conference play prior to the Holiday break. The Patriots sit 1-9 on the year and dropped all four of their league games in 2023, but will have a chance to jump back into the Lone Star Conference East Division race with games against in-division opponents this weekend. The winners of the East and West Divisions will automatically received the no. 1 and no. 2 seeds in the 2024 Lone Star Conference Basketball Championship at season's end.
- The Patriots return to the court in 2024 ranked 14th in LSC with a scoring average of 69.7 points per game and concede 76.1 points a game, ninth best in the conference. UT Tyler has limited opponents to a 44.3 percent clip from the field this season, seventh best in the league. As a unit, the Patriots average the third most blocks per game (3.80).
- Guard Bryce Roberts leads the team with an average of 13.6 points per contest, but has been limited to single digits in each of his last four outings. Forward Alec Zambie registered double-digit scoring figures in both games for the Patriots in Hawaii, increasing his scoring average to 10.6 for the year. The Plano, Texas native also leads the team with an average of 6.6 rebounds per contest.
- Guard Jonathan Jackson ranks second on the team with an average of 12.0 points per game, but has been sidelined due to injury since Dec. 2nd.
- The Patriots are 234-285 (.456) all-time as a program and 54-81 (.420) since beginning Division II play in 2019-20. The Patriots are 24-56 in four seasons of Lone Star Conference play.
- The Patriots have shown glimpses of success during the Division II era, having earned national rankings early in both the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons, but closed out each of the last two campaigns with three and eight game losing streaks, respectively. UT Tyler finished 9-17 last season and 5-17 in Lone Star Conference play. The Patriots had their best season of the Division II era the previous year as they went 16-10, made their first appearance in the Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament and were regionally ranked in three editions of the NCAA Division II Regional Rankings.
- Head coach Tim Moser takes the reigns of the program in 2023-24 as the fifth head coach in UT Tyler men's basketball history. Moser returns to the men's side of the collegiate game after serving as the Associate Head Coach for a remarkable turnaround within the UT Tyler women's basketball program.  As a head coach, Moser holds a 512-181 career record (.747) and has won 13 conference championships en route to 12 conference or region coach of the year accolades. Combined with his totals as an assistant coach, Moser has coached 20 conference championship teams during his storied career. He has served as head coach on the men's side at Eastern Wyoming College from 2018-2021 and at Otero Junior College from 1998-2005. He went 150-31 (.828) over six seasons as head coach of the women's side at Alaska-Anchorage from 2006-12.
- The 2023-24 roster features just three returners from the 2022-23 roster for UT Tyler, only one of which saw game action last season. Redshirt senior Terrell Wilson will return for his second season in a UT Tyler uniform after earning All-Lone Star Conference honors in 2020-21 and 2021-22 at Midwestern State. The Houston, Texas native will serve as the leading returner in all statistical categories for the Patriots and averaged 7.7 points a contest last year. The 2023-24 roster features 16 newcomers to begin the year, seven junior college additions, five four-year transfers and four freshman.
- UT Tyler is 4-2 all-time against Oklahoma Christian and have won all three meetings with the Eagles inside the Herrington Patriot Center.
- UAFS holds a 5-2 advantage in the all-time series between the two programs. The Lions are 3-2 in Tyler and have won each of the last three meetings in the series.
