TYLER, TEXAS – UT Tyler began their Lone Star Conference slate with a single point on Wednesday night after drawing 3-3 with DBU on their home turf on Wednesday night.
The first half saw just two shots on goal over the first 40 minutes, one by each side. However, a late substitution from the Patriots with just under 10 minutes left in the half created some momentum. That momentum came to fruition in the form of a beautiful long ball from
Oscar Sosa that found a streaking
Jordan Toy, who was able to slot it home just inside the post for a 1-0 Patriots lead just before the half.
Not even two minutes into the second half, UT Tyler struck again, this time on a loose ball to make it 2-0. A pass found its way to Danny DeMarais, who dropped off a gorgeous back heel pass to
Omar Belahna, who slipped to his right before slotting home his shot just inside the right post.
Not even two minutes later, the Patriots found the netting again. This time
Julian Smith set up the goal on a cross from the corner of the box. The ball found DeMarais on the run, who initially hit it off the keeper before depositing the rebound into the goal for a 3-0 lead.
With the big lead in hand, the Patriots now looked to close out the match and drain the final 41 minutes. However, DBU had other plans, as they found their first goal of the match off of a corner kick in the 59
th minute.
Just over six minutes later, DBU scored again, on what happened to be nearly the exact same play from a corner kick that found the head of Hunter Dierlam for his second goal of the night. That goal cut it down to 3-2 in UT Tyler's favor, this time with just under 30 minutes left.
Over the final 30 minutes of action, both teams battled closely, with DBU putting a pair of shots on goal only for goalkeeper
Alan Johnson to hold firm and not allow anything to get home.
In the 87
th minute, DBU drew a dangerous free kick that they then fired off the woodwork but they were able to keep the ball in the Patriots half and continue to apply pressure. That pressure earned a throw in at a dangerous spot, and the ball was batted around before DBU was able to connect on a low pass that was then put into the back of the net to tie the game and make it a 3-3 final.
In the game, DBU outshot the Patriots 18-10 and 6-4 in shots on goal. The Patriots held a 3-1 advantage in saves, while DBU held the corner kick advantage 6-3.
Jordan Toy,
Omar Belahna, and
Danny DeMarias each collected a goal, while DeMarias and
Oscar Sosa collected assists.
UT Tyler now sets their sights on a matchup with West Texas A&M on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. in Canyon, Texas.
