LAST TIME OUT

Last week the Patriots played just one game, a battle inside the HPC with #12 DBU. The Patriots battled tough, holding a lead at the halftime break, but a charge to open up the second half from DBU proved to be enough as they held on for a 72-62 victory in LSC competition.

PATRIOTS NOTES AND TRENDS

  • UT Tyler is 3-6 on the season and 0-3 in LSC play.
  • The Patriots have now equalled their win total from the 2023-24 season. One of those is a win over Regis, which doubles as an in-region victory and a win over the team picked third in the preseason RMAC poll.
  • Head coach Tim Moser is in his second season as head coach of the program. Moser returns to the men's side of the collegiate game after serving as the Associate Head Coach for a remarkable turnaround within the UT Tyler women's basketball program.  As a head coach, Moser holds a 517-206 career record and has won 13 conference championships en route to 12 conference or region coach of the year accolades. Combined with his totals as an assistant coach, Moser has coached 20 conference championship teams during his storied career. He has served as head coach on the men's side at Eastern Wyoming College from 2018-2021 and at Otero Junior College from 1998-2005. He went 150-33 (.828) over six seasons as head coach of the women's side at Alaska-Anchorage from 2006-12.
  • In the early going, the Patriots are putting together a dominant defense at the national level. They rank 4th nationally in field goal percentage defense, 13th in three point percentage defense, 13th in scoring defense, and 30th in blocks per game.
  • Individually, Dontrell Hewlett ranks inside the top 10 in the LSC in assist/turnover ratio (10th), blocks per game (6th), and assists per game (6th). Nikolas Gustavson ranks 7th in the LSC in total three pointers made, racking up 20 so far.

LOBOS NOTES AND TRENDS
  • Sul Ross State is 1-6 overall and 0-3 in the LSC on the season in what is their first year as members of the Lone Star Conference since beginning the Division II transition. The Lobos have lost four straight games with their last win coming back on November 12th.
  • As a team they are averaging 70 points per game on 42.8% shooting and 31.7% from beyond the arc. Their opponents are averaging 76.9 points per game on 46.8% shooting and 38.4% from beyond the arc.
  • They have three double digit scorers, led by Ethan Yancy at 15.6 points per game. Yancy is hitting those marks on 48.7% shooting and 32% from beyond the arc while leading the team in steals and posting the second best mark in assists.
  • Xavier Webb leads the program and is in his fifth season. He holds a career record of 39-65 so far.
  • UT Tyler leads the all-time series between the schools at 10-5. The Patriots also won the most recent meeting on January 3, 2019 in Tyler.

MUSTANGS NOTES AND TRENDS
  • Western New Mexico is 2-7 on the year and 1-2 in LSC competition thus far. Their most recent game was a win over University of the Southwest, and their lone LSC win is over Sul Ross State.
  • The Mustangs are averaging 64.4 points per game on 41.4% shooting and 31.5% from beyond the arc. Their opponents average 74.7 points per game on 43.1% shooting and 32.1% from beyond the arc.
  • Isaiah Marin leads the team on the offensive side, averaging 12.6 points per game on 44% shooting. He is also the team leader in rebounds, assists, and steals.
  • Head Coach Mark Bunker is in just his second season with the Mustangs and has a record of 6-31. Previously he was the head coach at Scottsdale Community College.
