CANYON, TEXAS - #3 West Texas A&M plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to walk-it-off against #6 UT Tyler by a 4-3 final on Saturday afternoon.
UT Tyler took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth in a ballgame that maintained a 1-0 differential in favor of West Texas A&M through four innings of play. The Lady Buffs scored a run in the bottom half of the fifth and then sent the tying and winning runs home after loading the bases with no outs in the bottom of the seventh.
The Patriots drop a third straight game for the first time since 2010 and lose a Lone Star Conference series via a sweep for the first time since 2020. UT Tyler falls to 8-4 on the year and 0-3 in Lone Star Conference play.
Starter
Genesis Armendariz allowed a run home on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first and then worked through the fourth inning unscathed from that point forward despite the 1-0 deficit. UT Tyler put a runner on in the second, third and fourth innings, but couldn't manage to push across the tying run.
Senior
Cassidi Mullen led off the fifth inning with a single up the middle and then scored on a
JT Smith triple to right field to finally break the scoreless draught for the Patriots. Smith's two-out triple down the line started a rally for the Patriots as
Michelle Arias and
Courtney Plocheck produced back-to-back RBI singles to score Smith and
Sam Schott for the 3-1 UT Tyler advantage.
An infield single with two outs for the Lady Buffs in the bottom of the fifth cut the lead to just 3-2.
UT Tyler stranded the bases loaded in the top of the sixth inning and left two runners aboard in the top of the seventh. West Texas A&M proved those unconverted chances for UT Tyler costly as a walk and a pair of singles to start the bottom of the seventh loaded the bases.
A walk sent the tying run home on the ensuing batter and then a sac fly to rightfield walked off a victory for West Texas A&M for the second time in the series.
Armendariz suffered the loss, dropping to 4-3 on the year, and allowed four earned runs on seven hits. The graduate student struckout six Lady Buffs and allowed seven walks.
Plocheck notched the lone multi-hit outing of the day for the Patriot offense, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. UT Tyler outhit West Texas A&M by an 8-to-7 final tally.
UT Tyler will stay on the road on Tuesday and Wednesday against Cameron for their second Lone Star Conference series of the year.
