Box Score TYLER, TEXAS – UT Tyler women's tennis picked up their first win of 2024 in their second match of the season as they took down Ouachita Baptist by a score of 5-2.
In doubles action to lead off the match, it was the Tigers who got the better of the Patriots as they collected wins in both the #3 and #1 slots to pick up the point. The Patriots got the win in slot #2 as
Elisa Buhagiar and
Kanika Sivaraman closed out their match 6-4.
Down 1-0 after the doubles, the Patriots responded in a huge way, taking the first set in five of the six singles matches to immediately put the pressure back on the Tigers.
That charge was led by a trio of Patriots in the #2, #3, and #5 slots, as all three matches went the Patriots way in less than an hour. In #2 singles,
Allison Schwartz rolled her way to a 6-3, 6-1 straight sets win.
Immediately following her was Sivaraman, who collected another dominant straight sets win in scores of 6-2, 6-1. In #5 singles, Buhagiar would follow her doubles partner with another straight sets win, this one in scores of 6-2, 6-0.
Those three wins would give the Patriots a 3-1 advantage, and they didn't have to wait long to claim the clinching point.
Just minutes after Buhagiar claimed her point,
Muskan Gupta stepped up in the #1 slot to pick up a 6-1, 6-3 straight sets win over her opponent to give the Patriots their fourth and decisive point.
The Patriots would take their only loss in singles from the #4 slot, as the Tigers took down
Luisa Moraes by scores of 5-7, 6-1, (10-5). The Patriots final point would come from
Anna Melnik, who completed a dramatic win that featured three different tiebreakers on her way to a 6-7, 7-6, (10-6).
The Patriots will now look ahead to continuing their homestand, as they will host (RV) Southern Arkansas and (RV) Central Oklahoma on February 23 and 24. Each of those matches is scheduled for a 10 a.m. start at the Summers Tennis Center.
